What to plant in the vegetable garden in August?

Summer is the time to sow to enjoy good vegetables until the end of the year. [1] From June to August, put your gardening skills to work and sow delicious lettuce or juicy radishes and beans.

Bean

Beans are a vegetable that is easy to sow. To facilitate seed germination, leave 5cm between plants and 50cm between rows. Usually you have to wait two to five months before you can harvest them.

Lettuce and mesclun

Leaf lettuce and mesclun are sown from June to August. For good growth, sow the seeds in rows with a distance of 30 to 50 cm. Note, these must not be too deep and the temperature of the soil must remain cool (between 12 and 15 degrees). The first leaves appear four to five weeks after sowing.

summer chicory

Chicory seeds should be about 1 foot apart (between rows) and pressed 5 cm into the soil. It is recommended to hoe regularly (‘remove weeds’) and water. Harvesting is generally done three months after sowing.

Beetroot

Red beets are also sown in summer, from June to August. Seeds should be sown every 10 cm, about 5 cm deep. Then it remains only to water regularly and thin out the seedlings from time to time.

summer radish

What to plant in August? The radish, of course, which is sown in the open ground all summer. Sow the seeds every 20 cm, about 1 cm deep because if you push them too deep you will not see them germinate. Don’t forget to water often enough to prevent the vegetables from becoming too spicy.

summer purslane

Summer purslane is sown in rows spaced 20 to 30 cm apart. Once planted, consider watering, weeding and lighting the plants. These three steps are essential to get very tender leaves. The harvest takes place just before the first frost.

Turnip and turnip

Turnip and rutabaga are sown from June to August. Plant the seeds in a line, about 1 cm deep, to watch them germinate. When the first leaves appear, thin out a little to allow the plants to grow well (keep vegetables only every 10cm). Harvest takes place about two to four months after sowing.

What to transplant in August in the vegetable garden?

On the transplanting side, they are also the same vegetables as in July. To replant young lettuce or escarole plants, nothing could be easier…

Lettuce

Please note, we don’t just transplant plants, but only the youngest and strongest. Once you’ve collected them, arrange them in the planting holes, taking care not to push them too far into the ground (the collar should remain exposed). Once this is done, make sure you keep pests away from your plants and don’t neglect maintenance.

Curly chicory and escarole

Curly chicory and escarole should be picked very young (maximum between two and four leaves). Follow the previous steps to transplant them and make sure to water the plants regularly to allow them to develop properly.
