PMA: Sperm and egg donation reached record high in 2021

At the heart of the debates about opening assisted reproduction to all women who ensouled France in 2021, a glimmer of hope has discreetly taken shape… Sperm and egg donations have reached a record in the ‘Hexagon. “Nearly 600 men donated sperm in 2021”confirms the Biomedicine Agency in its press release, published March 1. “This is the maximum recorded so far.”

Donations are widely encouraged by the Agency dealing with these issues. Indeed, since the PMA opened for single women and lesbian couples last September, applications have exploded. A boom like these record donations is not yet enough to meet all the demand, leaving many women in a waiting situation. There is on average more than a year between the application and the start of the PMA process.

By 2021, 6,800 women, concerned about the extension of PMA for all, would have filed a request, the Biomedicine Agency reports. Donations will therefore have to be accelerated to make assisted reproduction really accessible to everyone…
