how to reduce fridge starting current

by Wilma McKenzie Published 4 years ago Updated 2 years ago

To reduce the startup power some form of unloading is required. For big compressors this is done by lifting the suction valve (s). Sometimes a softstarter is also included. A better way in your situation would be to change to a socalled absorption type of fridge.

a) use a start capacitor, 150uF, for the first 1000ms. b) use an NTC thermistor. c) power resistors, for the first 1000ms (similar effect as NTC) d) voltage transformation to a lower voltage, e.g. from 230V to 200V.Sep 9, 2016

How can I reduce the startup power of my Refrigerator?

What is the startup Current of a refrigerator?

Startup current is the amperage / power draw peak that occurs when an appliance is operating in its most strenuous condition or cycle. For a compressor based refrigeration unit this would be at unit/compressor startup.

Why does the Fridge have to be next to the freezer?

The fridge had priority, so when it wants to run, it powers a relay that disconnects the other two units. When it's not running, the freezer in the basement is next, then finally, if neither of the first two are running, the freezer in the outside shop has it's chance.

Why won’t my fridge turn on?

Clearly, if your inverter cannot provide enough power for the fridge to start, the proper solution is to get a more powerful inverter.

How do I reduce the current on my fridge?

How to Reduce Refrigerator Energy ConsumptionClean the Coils. Usually located either on the back of the refrigerator or underneath a grill on the front, the condenser coils do the heavy lifting in terms of cooling. ... Check the Temps. ... Reorganize. ... Inspect Door Seals. ... Move the Fridge.

What is the starting current of a refrigerator?

Refrigerator Starting Current It shows a maximum inrush current of about 13 amps which lasts only about one-half second. Also, the running current is significantly less than the nameplate value.

How many amps does a refrigerator draw on startup?

Now, coming back to power usage, refrigerators require a starting wattage ranging from 800 to 1200 watts. Divide that by 120 volts, which is the amount of power that one outlet can produce, and you will get the amps the refrigerator needs. So, to bring it all together, refrigerators require 7 to 10 amps initially.

Why is my refrigerator using so much electricity?

If the coils or expansion valve become blocked, the compressor will run constantly and use excessive energy, even though no cool air will reach the refrigerator compartment. If the compressor fails, it must be replaced or you need to buy a new refrigerator.

Can I use an extension cord for a refrigerator?

Using a grounded extension cord with a three-prong plug is always the best choice for major appliances including refrigerators. When it comes to amperage, check the owner's manual for your refrigerator to determine the amperage rating and then choose an extension cord with an equivalent rating.

What is the starting current of a compressor?

Ohm's Law, often expressed as I = P/V, where I is the current, P is the power in watts and V is the voltage, states that the current equals the wattage divided by the voltage. For example, a 720-watt compressor running on 120 volts draws a starting current of 6 amps: 720/120 = 6.

Can a refrigerator be on a 15 amp circuit?

Most refrigerators run between 3 to 6 amps, with that said, a refrigerator can spike at peak usage up to 15 amps. It's best to take into consideration worst case scenarios. You should have refrigerators and freezers installed on a 15-20 amp dedicated 120 volt circuit.

Do we need stabilizer for refrigerator?

Most old refrigerators do need a stabilizer. Even refrigerators can get damaged due to surges (especially the ones with inverter technology) so either buy a stabilizer with surge protection feature or make sure you buy a surge protector along with it.

How many hours does a fridge run per day?

about eight hours perStep Three: Most “average” refrigerators run for about eight hours per day. Multiply 8 hours of usage by the number of watts you came up with in step two, or 8 x 960 = 7,680 watts per day, on average. But 7,680 watts is only 7.68 kilowatt-hours.

Is it cheaper to run a fridge full or empty?

A full fridge can be more energy efficient than an empty one.

6. Check the door gasket for air leakage

If you see carefully, there is a gasket attached to the refrigerator door. The purpose of that gasket is to create a sealed environment so that cold air can not escape outside.

7. Keep sufficient space around the refrigerator

See, refrigerators can not produce air. What it does is that it conditions the air. It takes the heat from inside the cabinet and dump it tooutside. That is how it cools the inside cabinet.

8. Change refrigerants frequently

Refrigerant is the liquid that flows through the refrigeration system, sucks the hot air from inside, and dumps it outside. Without refrigerant, a refrigerator can not work. R600 and R134A are the two most common refrigerants used in refrigerators.

9. Set the right temparature

Refrigerators are meant for cooling items but that does not mean that you should set any temperature. For example, if you keep some water bottles or cold drinks in the fridge, no need to set the temperature before 10 degrees. Right?

10. Buy an inverter refrigerator

No, your refrigerator won’t run during a power cut if you buy an inverter refrigerator. However, an inverter refrigerator consumes 40% less power than a normal refrigerator.

11. Clean the condenser coils

Condensers are meant for dissipating the heat outside. If there is dust on the condenser coils, it can not dissipate heat and the refrigerator will consume more power. So clean condenser tubes regularly.

12. Defrost the refrigerator every week

Many of us do not have an auto defrost refrigerator. Especially if you own single-door refrigerator chances are there that it won’t come with auto defrost. In that case, make a habit of defrosting the interior every week so that the refrigerator has to do less work and consume less power.

Tips to reduce refrigerator power consumption

1. Organize Your Refrigerator: One of the major errors most of us do is either overstuff our refrigerator or leave it completely empty.

Old VS New Refrigerator Power Consumption

If you are using a refrigerator that you purchased in the last 10 years, then chances are it is BEE rated and has energy-saving stars on it.

I agree. I don't see the current stated in the manual, but it's fused at 13amps and the model #436 hints that its 436 watts, or 1.9amps. Start up current is probably about 12amps.
