What to plant in May in the vegetable garden?

Eggplant

In ratatouille, caviar or stuffed aubergine is a must for the summer period. After several days of development in buckets, this vegetable is planted in the ground (for the hottest regions). Be careful, choose only the most resistant plants. Bury them a bit to protect them from the wind, even if that means burying the collar a bit. That’s it, all that remains is to water abundantly and pay attention to the presence of pests, such as snails (see our practical article on how to keep them out of the vegetable garden naturally and effectively. Cucumber

What to plant in May in the vegetable garden? The cucumber of course! This green vegetable, which looks exactly like a pickle during its development, is an essential part of our summer salads. In the months before planting, it should be sown in pots and placed in a warm place. At the end of May (after the Ice Saints), place the seedlings in planting holes in which you previously added potting soil and sand. Don’t forget to water! [2]

Zucchini

Another flagship vegetable for sunny days, the zucchini. The good news is that it is easy to grow and produces in large quantities. It is sown first in April in buckets, then in the ground from May. To do this, place the plants in planting holes that are 10 cm deep and enriched with compost. Remember to hoe and water regularly for proper plant development. [3]

Potato

There is still time to plant the potatoes in the garden. To do this, dig a 15 cm deep groove and place the tuber every 30 to 40 cm in the bottom of the hole, with the sprout pointing up, and cover with soil. Water regularly and remember to hill when the plants are about eight inches high. [4]

Pepper

In May, you can also plant the peppers after they have been sown in pots from February to April. Dig the soil to lighten the soil and dig holes about a foot in diameter. Add compost and sand to enrich the soil and plant your seedlings there. For good development, plant them sheltered from the wind and water them often. [5]

Tomato

We end with the most popular fruit of the summer: the tomato. Before planting, prepare the soil by supplying it with all the necessary nutrients: compost, manure, nettle fertilizer, natural fertilizer, etc. Then plant the tomatoes as deep as possible and keep them well apart so that they have enough room to grow. And for better production, add a cane to each plant and protect your fruit from diseases, such as powdery mildew (learn how to treat it and protect your vegetable garden). [6]
