The number of searches related to weight loss has dropped by 20% on the Pinterest platform as summer approaches. Conversely, the term “body reference with curves” is five times more popular than last year.
“The perfect body is waiting for you.” What if this order was relegated to the closet? Every summer period, the same goal emerges on social networks, that of the “summer body”. This term is used to describe a lean and muscular body, the one that we proudly display during the summer holidays.
But according to a recent survey by Pinterest of its users, Diet and weight loss research plummets compared to the previous year. According to the photo-sharing social network, which had 478 million active users in 2021, searches with the term “weight losss” fell by 20% between July 2021 and May 2022.
Conversely, between mid-April and mid-May, searches stating “quick and healthy meals” are multiplied by 65. Searches with the terms “healthy food motivation” were by 13. These results are published while the platform has banned all ads related to weight loss ads since July 2021.
The strong advent of body positive
Research to learn to accept your body is increasing. This is the case for the term “body positive”which has twice as many searches, as does the term “body reference with curves” whose searches are multiplied by five. The research of “quotes for accepting your body” are three times as much.
the “body positive” comes in response to this quest for the perfect body. Founded in 1996 in the United States, this movement aims to be inclusive and bring together all types of morphologies. Since the 2010s, this movement can be heard on social networks. In 2016, the hashtag #bodypositve garnered more than 6 million mentions on the Instagram network, making it one of the most used and popular. Nowadays it seems to be gradually becoming part of people’s mentality.
