Just noticed a couple of weeks ago that the bark on our little dogwood had bark peeling on the base. I guess I tend to want to correct a problem before it gets too big, hence is this anything to be concerned about or is it last winter or like a kid "It'll outgrow it"?

Can't tell from the photo, but I'm assuming that this is the native American dogwood, cornus florida. This species is subject to a number of problems, especially when planted outside its native range in the Southeast. Z5b is pushing the limits for hardiness and is a stressful environment.
