How many watts does it take to run an air compressor?
Heavy-duty compressors operate on 220-volt current and require special wiring and outlets. A 110-volt compressor drawing 15 amps uses 1,650 watts (110 volts x 15 amps), while a 220-volt compressor drawing 15 amps consumes 3,300 watts (220 volts x 15 amps).
How many amps do you need for an air compressor?
The compressor, if designed for 240 volts, will have a running current draw of 23.23 amps.
How much horsepower do I need for air compressor?
Air compressors typically have a horsepower rating between 1.5 and 6.5, though some larger, stationary air compressors can have up to 15 HP. If you are using standard electric power outlets, you'll need an air compressor at 2 HP or less because standard AC cords require lower voltage to function.
Will a 3500 watt generator run a air compressor?
For example, you'll have plenty of power to run an air compressor, two or three drills, and a nail gun – but not if you also need to power a saw at the same time. So, 3,500-watt generators are best for work sites that only have two to three people working at a time.
What size generator do I need to run a 5HP air compressor?
Subject: RE: What size portable generator to run 5hp air compressor? Ran a 1.5 hp with a 7000 watt. Sometimes it had a problem starting it, but once started would run fine. A true 5 hp on 220 volts would require 28 amps to run on 220 or 6160 watts so at a minimum I would think 20,000 watt generator.

What to consider when selecting a generator?
When selecting a generator there are several important features to consider: Wattage / Engine / Run Time / Starting / Mobility. The size of the generator you need depends on your power requirements. Generally a higher wattage generator lets you power more items at once.
How many watts does a 2 bed house need?
In a typical 2 bed house, running only essentials items (a few lights, refrigerator, heating system) it can require between 5000 – 7000 Watts.
What is running watts?
Running Watts are the amount of power required for the tool or appliance to run normally. However the starting Watts are what is needed only during the first few second or the initial start-up of the operation. In most cases, only one item will start or cycle at the same time. Therefore this is the most accurate estimate.

I want to run a 2hp compressor (single phase) from a petrol generator. I borrowed a 2kW generator from a mate, but it won't start the compressor. The compressor motor starts to turn and buzzes a bit, then the generator's overload light starts flashing.

Does the compressor have a dump valve or is it trying to compress air straight from start-up ?
Avocet
Thanks both. I think it does have a dump valve, (each time it stops there's a slight hiss of air escaping for a fraction of a second), but to be honest, I don't think it really gets as far as trying to compress any air in any case.
SimonH2
You will need a genny a LOT larger than the compressor. As mentioned, motors take a huge inrush of power as they start up (may be as much as 5-10 times the normal running current).

Thanks all. I think you've saved me from making an expensive mistake! As it's only for one job, I think I'll go for a paint brush instead. I was hoping to paint some railings, but they're a good 100m from the nearest power.
