As middle and high School ELA educators, we teach a number of literacy skills with expertise and effectiveness. Literature studies, writing, speaking, vocabulary, research, critical analysis . the list goes on (and on)! Yet, many of us are still at a loss when it comes to helping students reading below grade level.
FRUSTRATION LEVEL
Frustration level texts include all texts that students struggle to read accurately and comprehend easily. Learners read these difficult texts with less than 90% word accuracy. Texts are frustration level when comprehension is very low and students cannot decode well without moderate (or extensive) assistance.
INSTRUCTIONAL LEVEL
Instructional level texts are below frustration level and above independent level. They’re challenging, but manageable with a teacher or other adult to answer questions and provide guidance. Students read instructional level texts with 90-95% word accuracy. They will need some assistance with instructional level passages, including:
INDEPENDENT LEVEL
Independent reading levels include everything students can accurately read and easily comprehend without help. Technically, students read at their independent level with 95% (or better) word accuracy.
