What is the formula for strontium sulfide?
May 21, 2020 · Strontium sulfate (SrSO4) is the sulfate salt of strontium. It is a white crystalline powder and occurs in nature as the mineral celestine. …
What is the reaction mechanism for strontium?
Strontium compounds can be water soluble. Examples include strontium carbonate with a water solubility of 10 mg/L, and strontium chromate with a water solubility of 9 mg/L. Why is strontium present in water? The most significant strontium mineral is celestite (strontium sulphate; SrSO 4), followed by strontianite (strontium carbonate; SrCO 3). At least 140,000 ton is exploited annually.
What is strontium sulfate used for?
Apr 07, 2022 · Unlike other sulfate containing minerals, celestite is not soluble in water. Further processing of SrSO4 requires conversion to water-soluble strontium sulfide (SrS). In …

Abstract and Figures
Celestite is the main source of strontium containing chemicals and metallic strontium. Unlike other sulfate containing minerals, celestite is not soluble in water. Further processing of SrSO4 requires conversion to water-soluble strontium sulfide (SrS). In this study, solubility of SrS in distilled water is investigated.

How is strontium sulfide made?
Strontium sulfide is produced by roasting celestine with coke at 110–1300 °C. The sulfate is reduced, leaving the sulfide: About 300,000 tons are processed in this way annually. Both luminous and nonluminous sulfide phases are known, impurities, defects, and dopants being important.
What is the name of the compound that is a white solid?
Chemical compound. Strontium sulfide is the inorganic compound with the formula Sr S. It is a white solid. The compound is an intermediate in the conversion of strontium sulfate, the main strontium ore called celestite (or, more correctly, celestine), to other more useful compounds.
Is strontium sulfate soluble in water?
It is a white crystalline powder and occurs in nature as the mineral celestine. It is poorly soluble in water to the extent of 1 part in 8,800.
Is strontium sulfate a precursor?
Applications and chemistry. Strontium sulfate is of interest as a naturally occurring precursor to other strontium compounds, which are more useful. In industry it is converted to the carbonate for use as ceramic precursor and the nitrate for use in pyrotechnics.
