Using Tenacity to suppress zoysia in northern mix
Unfortunately, the previous owner of my property had it sodded with zoysia years back. I’ve been renovating it section by section. Total turf area is 10K, but the part I want to suppress this summer is 4k in backyard. I had it over-seeded last autumn with Lesco northern mix, and it’s actually filling in pretty well.

The problem is the Zoysia not being on the label as something it kills, so you're going to have to experiment with it. If you look at the label it will say what the max rate per year is for the types of good grass, go over that and you can damage it.

Interested in the results. What rate 2,4-D were you using? Surfactant? The labels always seem to warn that the use of a surfactant is more likely to damage the warm season grasses. I'd hit it now during green up. That's always listed as a no-no too.

I know this isn't related to Zoysia, but when I attacked Poa annua I used 1oz rate every 3-4 days for multiple apps (4-5 apps was the magic number for me). Of course I added a surfactant. I wonder if low dose, shorter intervals wouldn't be more effective once the Zoysia hits its stride (July/August)?

Tenacity will definitely whiten it. Will it kill it? I never tried enough to find out. It gets rounded up as soon as I see it. I'm sure you could suppress it with high doses of Tenacity. Honestly though, I think you're wasting your time, money and Tenacity trying to seed into established zoysia without killing it first.

If a reno is out of the question, then the approach you're considering is probably your best option. Tenacity, mow high, overseed, feed very aggressively in the Fall when the zoysia is sleeping. One good thing about Zoysia is it doesn't spread well in shade or into thick turf.
