How do I know if my lifter gasket is bad?

The gasket flattens out and allows oil pressure to go into the oil pan rather than to the lifters. To help determine if this condition is present, the observed oil pressure on a “Hot” engine will differ when measured at the top of the engine and compared to the bottom of the engine.

Why is my oil pressure low at idle?

On vehicles with installed oil pressure gauges, the engine idle may be lower than 10 psi. The cause of this condition may be a leaking camshaft thrust plate at the front of the engine. The plate is bolted to the front of the block and seals the front lifter oil galleries with a captured rubber “O” ring type seal.

What happens if your car has low oil pressure?

There are a few things that can happen if your car has low oil pressure. The most common symptom of low oil pressure is an oil pressure warning light on your dashboard. You may also notice signs like a noisy engine, check engine light, and in the worst case – a seized engine.

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information regarding Lifter Noise And Low Oil Pressure On GM Engines on 1997-2013 GM 4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L & 6.0L engines. This noise is only noticeable at idle and a slight increase in RPM will diminish the noise.

Can a bad lifter cause bad oil pressure?

Valve lifters are one of the first components to suffer wear when the oil pressure is consistently low. Low oil pressure can result from a number of factors, including excessive camshaft end play and worn cam bearings, worn oil pump gears, worn crankshaft journals and bearings and worn main and rod bearings.

What causes low oil pressure?

When the oil pressure is low, it indicates something is not working properly. It also means there likely is not enough lubricant moving through the system. Keep in mind that lubricant starvation will lead to metal-to-metal contact and machine failure.

Can a bad lifter cause low compression?

The most common cause of low compression is due to damaged valve seals or bad valves. Other common causes are worn piston rings or pistons. A defective hydraulic lifter or incorrect camshaft timing can also cause low compression in rare cases.

What happens if a lifter fails?

A faulty hydraulic lifter will usually result in the rocker arm, valve tip and push rod also going bad if left unattended. You need to know how to tell when they hydraulic lifter is going bad or needs to be replaced. The most obvious symptom of a faulty hydraulic lifter is the noise it creates in your car's engine.

Will bad lifters cause check engine light?

The most common symptom of a bad hydraulic lifter is engine misfires at idle or when accelerating together with engine noise. It will in most cases also result in a check engine warning light on your dashboard.

How do you fix low oil pressure?

One way to fix oil pressure in this case is to use a higher-viscosity oil, such as switching from 5W-20 to 10W-30. This slight change in oil viscosity can make up for the increased bearing clearance, increasing oil pressure back to normal.

Can you replace lifters without replacing Cam?

The camshaft does not necessarily need to be replaced when replacing lifters, and often times is not. In the case of a 4 cylinder, especially, I would replace lifters without doing the camshaft since you can replace the lifters without removing the head.

Can valve seals cause low compression?

Exhaust valves and air intake valves at the top of the cylinder can also get overheated, and leak gas or the valve seals can become too worn to seal the gas in properly. Either way, the result is often low compression.

How much pressure drop on Isky roller lifter?

Roller lifters with their additional axle and lobe oiling holes do cause a slight pressure drop noticeable at idle. Isky for one suggest 10-12 psi drop at idle over flat tappets when switching to their RedZones.

Do lifters affect oil pressure?

Yes, lifters will effect your oil pressure, but bearing clearance is a huge contributor. Ask whoever built the short block what the bearing clearance is. If he can't tell you exactly, I would be a little concerned about that. I have my new motor at .0025 on the rods and .0035 on the mains.

I say tear the engine down and find out what is wrong. Might be a easy fix?

injectedmav Member

Cheap fix: drop the oil pan, remove the rod caps a journal at a time and repl the rod brgs, remove the timing cover and trans and lower the crank about 1/2", slide new main brgs in and see what it does. It will cost you the gaskets and bearings. I did that for a friend on a budget and it lasted another few years.

I've replaced main bearings without removing the trans and TC cover. You will need to remove the main cap and loosen the others to drop the crank thousands of an inch. Insert cotter pin in the crank's oil hole and turn engine backwards with a socket. The pin will roll the bearing out. To install, reverse procedure. Then torque the mains to spec.

Is there a chance this could be just a rod bearing? Can one rod bearing cause a big drop in oil pressure?

Bryant forgot more than learned

if a rod bearing is bad enough to cause that drastic of pressure loss, i would expect that you could move the rod end on crank journal. so you should be able to drop the pan and try wiggling each rod end to see if you find a loose one. dont forget the oil pump may be loose or its pick up tube could be also.

Low Oil Pressure

This condition may also be noted by a lower oil pressure reading on vehicle oil pressure gauges or warning lights may come on at low idle conditions. It’s been reported these engines may start to lose oil pressure after many engine temperature cycles.

Camshaft Thrust Plate

The cause of this condition may be a leaking camshaft thrust plate at the front of the engine. The plate is bolted to the front of the block and seals the front lifter oil galleries with a captured rubber “O” ring type seal. Over time this seal becomes hardened and loses its sealing ability.
