Descale Your Keurig

Descaling is a way to periodically remove water scaling from your Keurig coffee maker that prevents debris from getting lodged in various parts of the machine, which may interfere with its functioning.

Clean the Needles

If after descaling, your problem with the Keurig not brewing a full cup is still happening, it may be the needles that are the problem. Believe it or not, debris, like foil from the K-Cup, can get lodged in the needles that pierce the cup, disrupting flow.

Clear the Reservoir Tube

Another possible reason for your Keurig not brewing a full cup is something interfering with the tube that connects the reservoir with the machine. Descaling will often resolve this problem, but if it doesn’t, you can:

Clear the Air

Another reason you may not be getting a full cup is that the pump cannot prime properly because there is extra air trapped in the machine. All you can really do here is try various methods of shaking the machine to get that air loose.

Solution 1 – Keurig Descale and Clean

Sometimes a brewer can start to only brew a partial cup. This problem is generally the result of the brewer not being cleaned and in particular the exit needle being clogged with coffee or other grounds from the different K-Cup portions.

Solution 2 – The Keurig Burp

A solution that some readers have found work, if only for a short period, is what we call the Keurig burp. We have written a separate guide for this process and you can find this guide here.

Solution 3 – Air Pump Replacement

The air pump sits below a solenoid in most Keurig brewers and a problem can arise if the solenoid develops a leak – which they too often do. Even a very slow leak, over time, can cause the electric air pump to seize or work intermittently. We are finding this comes up more and more with our readers and it is a design fault that Keurig are aware of.

Problem Diagnoise s

The problem Nanci faces with her Keurig could be from a couple of different faults. The first cause could be a disturbance to the air pump signals or a problem with the pump itself. You make your cup selection from the top pad of the Keurig. Underneath the cup size selection buttons is the Keurig’s brain – or central processing unit.

Solution One – The Keurig Burp

This is the easiest step to fixing this type of problem, and we have written a short guide to take you through the five-step process (don’t worry, it only takes about a minute). Check out our guide by following this link, or you can go to our main Repair Guide section.

Solution Two – Water Senor Check

If solution one hasn’t stopped the cup from overflowing, we can now check the Keurig water sensors. We want to make sure they are connecting correctly. For this solution, you will need to remove the outer casing of your Keurig. And then access the top of the water boiler and the main power board.

Solution Three – Micro Processor Board Replacement

Solution three involves replacing the microprocessing board. These units are not expensive, and we find ebay.com the best source of reliable brand new or second-hand boards. In buying a replacement board, you do not need the power board connector, air pressure hose, or board casing.

Solution Four – Air Pump Replacement

The final solution we have for fixing the overflowing cup problem is replacing the Keurig air pump. So far, we have looked at how the water sensors are connected. And then replacing the board that processors the signals and has the processing code on board. And finally, it’s dealing with the air pump itself.

Chuck McCabe, I just finished fixing one from a buddy's shop. Same issue, no matter what it would only brew 4 oz at a time and took forever to do so. I did a few things. First I removed the plastic holder that holds the K-cups.
