I had foot and leg cramping like that. I have a sleigh bed, and would have to push my feet against the footboard to stop it! I had a hip replaced and it stopped. Low potassium levels can cause muscle cramping, and some medications, in my case cymbalta and bishoporol both deplete my potassium.

One thing I've learned as a nurse, if you don't wear good shoes it will surely ruin your life, lol. The height of the heel is important. Sometimes a heel too low is as bad as a one too high.
