What to put on your dog ID tags?

Put YOUR name on your dog, not your DOG'S name on his collar. The next most important information would be YOUR name, not your dog's. Having your name on the tag will make it easier for the person calling to get the right person on the phone, especially if you list a work number. History

The earliest mention of an identification tag for soldiers comes in Polyaenus ( Stratagems 1.17) where the Spartans wrote their names on sticks tied to their left wrists. A type of dog tag (" signaculum ") was given to the Roman legionary at the moment of enrollment.

Non-military usage

Some tags (along with similar items such as MedicAlert bracelets) are used also by civilians to identify their wearers and specify them as having health problems that may (a) suddenly incapacitate their wearers and render them incapable of providing treatment guidance (as in the cases of heart problems, epilepsy, diabetic coma, accident or major trauma) and/or (b) interact adversely with medical treatments, especially standard or "first-line" ones (as in the case of an allergy to common medications) and/or (c) provide in case of emergency ("ICE") contact information and/or (d) state a religious, moral, or other objection to artificial resuscitation, if a first responder attempts to administer such treatment when the wearer is non-responsive and thus unable to warn against doing so.

Why do we put a dog tag in our boots?

One really tough part of your uniform is your boots and if you get blown up or apart your boots will generally survive intact. Why do soldiers put dog tags on boots?

This is actually done across all branches of service but not all the time. Why are dogtags put on boots? In case you get blown up and that’s all they can find. It’s also useful because it has your blood type on the tags. Soldiers will put their blood type on tape, sharpied, or some kind of patch on their plate carrier, boots, knee pads, helmet - basically anywhere that is readily apparent on their body. I’ve seen soldiers put dog tags (silenced) in other areas like a mag pouch, etc.

Can you wear a dog tag on your neck?

Or rather, just something that can always go with your body as it is being processed for return to your family so your body can be identified by the various people involved in the process. However, only wearing them on a chain around your neck isn’t adequate, so standard practice is to have dog tags, or something like dog tags, in various places on yourself and/or equipment. When I first joined up, there were a bunch of Marines who got what we used to call “meat tags” - a tattoo of their dog tags, usually under one of their arms. I think the practice has kind of fell to the wayside though. Lacing a dog tag into your boot laces is an easy way to always make sure you’ve got one on you somewhere, and redundancy is always nice - maybe the ones around your neck got lost - maybe you never wore them like you were supposed to, like me, or maybe something worse happened and the only thing relatively unscathed on your body is your boots. Or maybe you are no longer in one piece but somebody finding your boot with a dog tag - and presumably the appropriate body parts - will help identify you as a KIA after the scene of an explosion or other horrific event.
