Another We Liked: Trader Joe's Cornbread Stuffing

Trader Joe's version of cornbread stuffing was our favorite of all the cornbread options we tried, but it still fell short in overall comparison. For having the added touch of being a cornbread stuffing, we felt this one was lacking seasoning and flavor.

Good If You're Gluten Free: Trader Joe's Gluten Free Stuffing Mix

We love that Trader Joe's is offering an option that makes it easy for those avoiding gluten to still enjoy this Thanksgiving staple. But, unfortunately, it didn't exactly deliver on texture. When we made this version, it got a little too mushy for our liking.

The Underdog Winner

We also gave top scores to Martin's brand of stuffing. Hey, we love our burgers on Martin's potato rolls so it made perfect sense that we'd love Martin's Potatobread Stuffing. It's made with the same just-a-smidge-sweet potato bread, and there are discernible chunks; it's not bread dust like many of the others.

Tastes Most Like Stovetop

Eating Stovetop is kind of like eating Cheerios. There are really no surprises—you know exactly what it's going to taste like. And hey, that's fine. The semi-gelatinous glob of bread will never throw a curveball at you.

For the Cornbread Fans

While making cornbread from scratch is probably the right answer, who really has time for that? If you want the grainy texture and sweet-savory flavor of cornbread, the Pepperidge Farm Cornbread Stuffing does the trick. It's a little one-note on the cornbready flavor so this is definitely another doctor-it-up situation.

The Least Brown

In a sea of tan to brownish stuffings, this vaguely greenish Trader Joe's batch stuck out. Should you judge your food by color? Probably not, but the swampy shade will get your attention. As far as texture goes, it was a little too gooey, almost approximating mashed potatoes or a bread pudding. It's not bad -tasting, just not worth a special trip.

The Fanciest But Least Edible

Do not fall for the autumnal leaf illustrations dancing around this box. Do not feel like your $4.99 (on the pricier side of the spectrum) is going to a good cause. The Canterbury Organics was a pile of soggy croutons. I mean, sure, we'd probably still eat it but overall, it was the most depressing.

The Winner

Out of both the supermarket and online order categories, Pepperidge Farm’s Herb Seasoned Classic Stuffing blew all the other options out of the water. The texture was great, not too soggy or dry, and it had a rich, savory flavor almost reminiscent of sausage.

Supermarket Stuffings

Kraft’s stuffing left us in divided camps. Some editors loved the salty, brothy flavor, while others felt that it was too much and didn’t resemble stuffing.

Order Online Stuffings

This stuffing came out a little soggy; however, it was tasty overall. Editors liked the crunch from the walnuts and how they paired with the sausage flavor, and the big chunks of bread were a plus, too.
