How to Use Path of Building – Planning Path of Exile Builds

So you think you’re ready to properly plan a build, exile? Then you are at the correct place. Path of Building (PoB), whether you use the official community tool by Openarl here, or the community fork located here, is the best tool for build planning.

Step 1 – Making a New Build

Pick a new build, since you won’t have any builds created yet. Even if you want to use someone else’s pastebin link from a build guide, you still have to hit “New”. We’ll talk a bit more about importing builds later in this guide.

Step 2 – Setting the Class and Ascendancy

Choose the correct class and ascendancy at the top middle of the screen, in Step 1 we said this was going to be a Trickster build, so we will pick Shadow and Trickster:

Step 3 – Inputting Your Main Active Skill

Having saved the build, the next thing to do in Path of Building is inputting your main Active Skill. Swap from the “Tree” tab to the “Skills” tab near the top left portion of the page. For the rest of the guide, I will refer to these as Tabs.

Step 4 – Ascendancy Points and Passive Tree Allocation

Go back to the “Tree” tab and if you zoom out far enough, you’ll notice the Ascendancy for Trickster is highlighted. Zoom in and within it you can hover over each node to see what they do, but more importantly, you can check the box for “Show Node Power” and it will color code damage nodes as red, and defense nodes as blue.

Step 5 – Inputting Support and Other Gems

Jump back over to the Skills tab. Underneath Vortex, let’s put in some supports. At any point you can enable or disable these supports, change them out, or just try different combinations to see what it does.

Step 5 – Gear

As mentioned previously, I already have gear on this build. Change over to the “Items” tab to start inputting your own gear. Gear is a very important consideration. I do not recommend maxing out to have perfect “mirror” quality gear. The odds are you will not achieve this unless you play 12 hours a day, all league long.

Plan out your skill tree

See which paths are more efficient, let Path of Building advise you on which nodes are the most beneficial to your current build, observe how taking a notable passive point would change your stats.

Which gems would benefit your build the most?

Prepare your skill gem links, watch the benefits of socketing them in different items, have suggestions for the most powerful gems to add to your setup.

Build your dream items, and your current self found gear

Path of Building is able to understand most mods that can be found on items and lets you perform anointments, crafting, corruptions, and more. Set up gear sets and compare the effects of your changes.

What has the community added so far?

Pantheon gods: Plan out your defenses better by picking your Pantheon powers.

Giving a custom build save path in Options successfully changes it to the correct folder, but next time you open PoB it won't remember it. Then, all my "shared items" seem to be missing. The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:

Openarl commented on Sep 6, 2018

Where is PoB installed? This behaviour indicates that the settings file isn't being saved correctly.

irontissue commented on Sep 7, 2018

I have two drives, an SSD and an HDD, not sure if that matters. It's installed on the SSD.. Program Files (x86)\Path of Building. The place I'm trying to change it to is my OneDrive folder in the HDD.

Openarl commented on Sep 8, 2018

The Settings.xml file is saved in "%ProgramData%\Path of Building"; could you check if that folder is read-only?

irontissue commented on Sep 8, 2018

I tested it some more.. Turns out it only happens when I restart my computer. If I just quit the application but don't restart my computer it remembers the folder.

irontissue commented on Sep 9, 2018

Weird, it seem to be working even on computer restart now! I didn't change anything. If it stops working again I'll let you know...

Combatting Power Creep: Vision vs. Reality

GGG says their vision is to reign in outliers that limit design space and create too big of a power gap in the player base. In 3.15 they instead nerfed the base power players get from passives, gems, and flasks, instead of touching the power creep coming from the cathedral ceiling they've made possible for gear.

IMMORTAL - a new immortality build and a warning to all players

There is a new immortal build. I'm posting this here because a certain group of players on TFT discord is going around the build trading sections offering this build in exchange for multiple mirrors, expensive items or other really expensive builds.

The simple followup question that isn't being asked during interviews with Chris

Something I am disappointed with (no offense) in the interviews so far is not asking a simple followup/clarifying question. This can be applied to numerous topics as seen below:
