I am confused how to get Knigthslime for the Tool Forge. I have visted 12 tinker Slime Islands and am not finding any purple slime whatsoever. The Island spawn rates seem extremely low and I have spent nearly 4 hours looking for islands. Also do not see any recipes for alternatives.

just bad luck sounds like, you can find entire islands made of it or you can get it as a random drop from harvesting the leaves of any slime tree. The island spawn rate isnt adjusted from what tinkers adds by default. The mining dimension is a pretty easy to find them as well since they are all easily visibile from the flat surface.
