Jerry Kohl and his girlfriend Terri Kravitz were high-school sweethearts who became specialty storeowners of a small boutique in Alhambra, California. Lee and Ginny were vendors who sold them jean belts. Two years later, in 1972, Lee and Ginny sold their business (called Leegin) to Jerry and Terri, who, by then, were husband and wife.
Building the Brand
Jerry became President of Leegin Creative Leather, and decided to run the business "from the heart" by personally servicing small boutiques and creating the men's belts with their own designers, in their own factories, to ensure high quality. Before the first Brighton accessory was made, Leegin had over 20 years of expertise.
Brighton's Beginnings
Out of the heritage of well-tailored, quality crafted men's belts, Jerry set out to make a new belt line with an impeccable pedigree, and the Brighton brand of men's belts was born. The belts were inspired by finely made English belts, and were named for the English city of Brighton.
Launching Lady Brighton
Stores carrying Brighton men's belts often had a ladies' department, and they wanted great-looking fine leather belts for those customers, too. The Lady Brighton belt line was launched. Classic, timeless handbags were added in 1993.
