Kerdi and porcelain tile question
For past year I've been reading the bathroom forum with the intent to learn as much as I can before remodeling. You guys are so great!! I have learned a ton, but I still have the same dilemma, and I'm hoping you will be able to clear it out. I've decided on the Kerdi membrane over my shower/tub combo, and I have 30x60 inches 3/8 thick porcelain tiles.I undertand that I have to use unmodifed thinset over the cement board and under the Kerdi, and again the unmodified thinset under the tile.

Let me put it this way-- ESPECIALLY with porcelain tiles, Schluter recommends the use of unmodified thinset. The reason being that you have the thinset surrounded by two impervious surfaces-- the Kerdi on one side, and the porcelain on the other-- neither of which allow the thinset to dry out all that quickly.
