I think the debate about The Giving Tree tells us, as writers, a couple of things.
What is the meaning of the giving tree?
Every single time he asks the tree for help, the tree always grants something useful to him. However, there was no part in the story that the boy ever said “thank you” and “please” to the tree. This is a great story to teach children the importance of saying these magic expressions.
What did the tree give the boy?
The tree gave the boy everything until it was reduced to a stump, but even then it found purpose in being a stump and “served” the boy. The entire length of the story shows you the character of the boy who spent his life going back to the same tree asking for this and that thing.
Why does the giving tree give endlessly to the boy?
Much of the beauty of The Giving Tree is that the tree gives endlessly to the boy because it loves him so dearly. When one sacrifices their own happiness in order to provide happiness for another, it is one of the greatest acts of love. The tree nearly lays down its life for the little boy whom it loves. Unconditional love, be it from a parent, a loved one, or from the deep well of tender and soft love within your heart, it would truly give anything for us to be happy. Even when asking too much, thanking too little, and taking just about everything, unconditional love still loves us just as sweetly as when we were a child, and always will.
Unconditional Love
Interpretations from the tree being a symbol of the boy’s mother to the tree being a metaphor for Christian charity are all applicable to the theme of unconditional love. The tree consistently gives the boy whatever it asks for, never asking for anything more in return than love.
Gender Roles
The tree is referred to as “she” and “her” and calls the forest her home. While the tree never gets to leave her home, the boy gets to leave home and find a job, marry, have kids and even set sail for a sea voyage.
Environmentalism
Little by little, the boy takes more and more from the tree until by the end there is nothing left but a stump.
