what is the difference between ventrogluteal and dorsogluteal

by Casper Haley Published 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago

As you can see, they’re quite close, but the ventrogluteal site is right at the top of your butt, near your waistline, while the dorsogluteal site is in the middle of your glute. The ventro injection is done on the gluteus MEDIUS, while the dorso injection is done on the gluteus MAXIMUS.

Background. Although the dorsogluteal region is frequently used for intramuscular injections, the ventrogluteal region is suggested as a more secure injection site due to its distance to the neurovascular structures.Feb 11, 2016

What is the difference between ventrogluteal and dorsogluteal injections?

Due to the location of the injection site, the ventrogluteal injection site is only slightly easier to reach than the dorsogluteal site, but those who are injecting themselves mostly find it easier than trying to twist and turn to find the other location. Finding the exact injection location, however, is still quite challenging in this site.

Is subcutaneous fat thicker at The dorsogluteal and ventrogluteal sites?

Results: Subcutaneous fat, muscle and total tissue were significantly thicker at the dorsogluteal site than the ventrogluteal site, and subcutaneous fat was significantly thicker in females than males at both sites (all p<0.001); there was no gender difference for muscle or total tissue thickness at either site.

Why are ventrogluteal sites more commonly used?

Ventrogluteal sites are much more commonly used because of the various benefits that they present. With this information about ventrogluteal sites, you’ll be able to have a thoughtful discussion with your medical professional to determine if this is the right injection site for you. One of the main benefits of dorsogluteal injection site is that it is very easy to locate. This means that even for a beginner to TRT and injections, it will be easy to find the location where you are supposed to put the injection.

Why is the ventrogluteal site preferred over Dorsogluteal?

With studies in recent years, it is recommended to use of ventrogluteal site instead of dorsogluteal site for injection because of it is away from the sciatic nerve and large blood vessels, it is more easy to identify and for reasons such as the subcutanous tissue is being more thinner for intramuscular injection.

What's the difference between ventrogluteal and Dorsogluteal?

The dorsogluteal site is characterised by thicker subcutaneous fat, muscle and total tissue than the ventrogluteal site. Female gender, and waist and hip circumferences are significant predictors of subcutaneous fat thickness at both sites; male gender is a significant predictor for dorsogluteal site muscle thickness.

How do you identify a ventrogluteal site?

Finding the ventrogluteal site Have your friend, family member, or caregiver, place the palm of their hand on the greater trochanter of the femur. This is the bony part that sticks out of your upper thigh near your hip. They will then locate the anterior iliac crest and place your index finger on it.

Is Dorsogluteal an IM site?

Recent literature state that dorsogluteal site should not be preferred for intramuscular injection. Because the dorsogluteal site is close to the sciatic nevre and the superior gluteal nerve and artery and subcutaneous tissue at the dorsogluteal site is thick.

What does Dorsogluteal mean?

Nurses learn there are four possible sites: the arm (deltoid); thigh (vastus lateralis); upper outer posterior buttock (gluteus maximus), also referred to as the dorsogluteal site; and the lateral hip (gluteus medius), also called the ventrogluteal site.

Why is Dorsogluteal not recommended?

Because of the sciatic nerve location, the dorsogluteal muscle is not recommended as an injection site. If a needle hits the sciatic nerve, the patient may experience partial or permanent paralysis of the leg.

What are the four IM injection sites?

Intramuscular injection sitesDeltoid muscle of the arm. The deltoid muscle is the site most typically used for vaccines. ... Vastus lateralis muscle of the thigh. ... Ventrogluteal muscle of the hip. ... Dorsogluteal muscles of the buttocks.

What is ventrogluteal muscle?

Ventrogluteal. The site involves the gluteus medius and minimus muscle and is the safest injection site for adults and children. The site provides the greatest thickness of gluteal muscles, is free from penetrating nerves and blood vessels, and has a thin layer of fat.

Where to inject ventrogluteal?

Ventrogluteal injections are usually performed with you/the patient laying down, with the side of your body you’ll be injecting into facing upward. Place the palm of your hand on the greater trochanter of the femur. This is the bony part that sticks out of your upper thigh near your hip.

Is ventrogluteal injection easier to do?

Dorsogluteal injections are easier to locate than ventrogluteal injections, due to the larger area. However, they are harder to reach, and you have to twist and turn behind to reach the buttocks when performing the injection.

Background

The dorsogluteal and ventrogluteal intramuscular injection sites both have their use in clinical practice; however, it has not been established in whom one or the other should be preferentially targeted or avoided.

Objectives

To determine whether subcutaneous fat, muscle, and total tissue thicknesses differ between the dorsogluteal and ventrogluteal sites, and whether theoretical injection outcome (intramuscular, subcutaneous, or bone contact) can be predicted by demographic and anthropometric data and described by an algorithm.

Participants

145 volunteers (57% female) of at least 18 years of age recruited through the university community.

Methods

Anthropometric data was collected and subcutaneous fat and muscle thicknesses were quantified by ultrasonography. Anthropometric differences between theoretical injection outcome groups (bone contact versus intramuscular versus subcutaneous at the ventrogluteal and dorsogluteal sites) was determined for each gender (ANOVA).

Results

Subcutaneous fat, muscle and total tissue were significantly thicker at the dorsogluteal site than the ventrogluteal site, and subcutaneous fat was significantly thicker in females than males at both sites (all p < 0.001); there was no gender difference for muscle or total tissue thickness at either site.

Conclusions

The algorithm describes when each of the ventrogluteal and dorsogluteal sites is appropriate or should be avoided, based on easily obtained anthropometric data. This has direct relevance in clinical practice in evidence-based site selection for gluteal intramuscular injections for optimal medication and health outcomes.

Where is the ventrogluteal vs dorsogluteal injection site?

Ventrogluteal VS Dorsogluteal Injection Sites. The ventrogluteal injection site is located on the gluteus medius, which is located right at the top outer edge of the glute muscle, near the hip, waist and belt-line. The dorsogluteal injection site is located on the gluteus maximus – the main part of your butt. ...

Why is ventrogluteal injection better than glute injection?

Why Ventrogluteal Injections Are Superior. The Ventrogluteal injection is the preferred glute injection site, as it is the least painful injection site. Is is also one of the safest intramuscular injection sites, as it is away from any major blood vessels and nerves, including the sciatic nerve. It is for these very reasons ...

What needle do you use for glute injections?

While there are many ways to skin a cat, this is the most common equipment used for a typical glute injection. An 18G 1.5 inch needle (in pink) for drawing (not necessary can draw with 23G too, but 18G makes drawing easier) For everyone else, the blue 23G 1.5 inch is best.
