Although mileage varies by how one drives, LR was able to put the new 5.0 V8 with 375 hp and with some clever injection designs were able to achieve the same "average" gas mileage as the LR3 and also achieve better emissions. The LR4 is leagues ahead of the LR3 (which is already an incredible machine) and I highly recommend the upgrade.

Why would I have chosen a lower mileage LR3 over a LR4?
Having driven both 3 and the 4 for about fourteen years now, personally if I had to choose today, I probably would have chosen a lower mileage LR3 over an LR4 simply because of its much better suspension tuning and steering weight. Either that or I would have tried to find a great tire to compensate for the firm suspension of LR4, but then the very light and loose feeling steering weight of LR4 would still be there. Would have been a tough call for me
Is the LR3 4.4 good?
But I felt that LR3' 4.4 was quite good at pulling at freeway speeds, with a sense and feeling of constant pull as you pushed it. Which is better, LR3 or LR4?
The LR4 drives a little better in my opinion. When they first came out I kind of noticed just a better feel to the steering geometry. The LR4 has more power and the dash has a nicer look to it. The LR3 runs the old 4.4 liter jag engine that has proven to be the most reliable engine Land Rover has run to date. The 5.0 engine makes a ton more power but has had its issues along the way, water pumps mostly, timing chains noisy with a couple updates for tensioners and blades that seem to quiet them down. I've seen a couple get lifter bores fagged out witch was blamed on materials, only a couple so not much of an issue. The 5.0 does not like to be overheated at all,and with questionable water pumps that's something your gonna want to keep your eye on.#N#The LR3 was much improved by the 08 model year with a lot of improvements in the wire harness splices and communication networks between modules.
