Spent is a Web-based game about the experience of poverty developed by McKinnon, a Durham based ad agency. Its primary high-level instructional goal is to instill a sense of empathy towards the impoverished in the player.

During a Poverty Simulation, you are placed in a “family” unit that you will work together with to live a month in poverty. These families are not unlike yours and mine, however they experience a daily struggle to provide basic needs.

The poverty simulation is a highly interactive experience designed to help participants begin to understand what a typical low-income family experiences trying to survive from month to month. In the simulation, participants assume the roles of family members in poverty.

agency McKinneySpent (stylized SPENT) is an online game about surviving poverty and homelessness. It was created by ad agency McKinney for their pro bono client Urban Ministries of Durham (UMD), a nonprofit organization whose mission "is to provide food, clothing, shelter and supportive services to neighbors in need".
Should I spend money on games?
Some would argue that spending real money allows players to enjoy the games more. The main point of the games is to bring enjoyment to players, so if spending real money does this, then it is worth it. Others argue that as, in mobile gaming, there are no tangible benefits, the money isn't really achieving anything.

PlaySpent.org is an interesting game type thing where you have to get through the month on $1000, you just lost your job, your savings are gone, you lost your house, and you're a single parent. You have to first find a job.

WHY YOU SHOULD PLAY SPENT
Nearly 1,200 Vermonters are homeless or precariously housed, according to the Vermont Coalition to End Homelessness. Many of the people we see at our COTS shelters had previously been living paycheck to paycheck and barely making rent each month when an unexpected event caused them to lose their housing.
SPENT FOR ALL AGES
By playing SPENT, youth, teens, and adults can start to process these complex issues. We have created several variations of this game, depending on the age and size of your group. The great thing about SPENT is that it is easily adapted to suit the needs of your group.
