Something to make your own

What’s a Tinderbox, you ask? A Tinderbox is a little box that explorers and adventurers used to carry with them. Inside, they’d keep flint and tinder dry so that they could spark a fire wherever their travels brought them. My Tinderbox is filled with hooks, yarn, notions, and poorly drawn sketches—everything I need to start my own little fire.

Who am I?

My name’s Courtney and I’m the designer and maker behind Tinderbox. I’m also a teacher, a dog mom and a lover of travel.

Step 1: Tinker Time - the Container

Let's start with tinker time, because what to do with all the materials we are about to collect when we have nowhere to put them. This part of the guide is for giving you ideas for your box.

Step 2: Sparks - Producing Heat

I guess this is the most traditional method to start a fire which fits into your tinderbox. Use the fire striker to hit a sharp edge of the flint, this will create the spark. The hardener steel fire striker will 'release' some particles which will than oxidate, the spark.

Step 3: Kindle - From Heat to Fire

When we got the heat, or the spark, it's time to create a fire from this, which of course can be done several ways. It's also important to have a fire large enough to get the fire going and not dying out. A couple of useful materials I like to use are explained below.

Step 4: Keep the Fire Going

Once you have a real flame, this flame needs to be kept going long enough to light up a log or thicker sticks in order to make your fire. To do so, you can off course stack the smallest wood you've got, or use dry leaves, but these will die out quite fast.

Step 5: Fire As Light - Emergency Candles

For centuries, fire is used as a source of light. Although most people don't use fire anymore as functional lights. In a survival or camping situation fire can still be a great source of light. And for those party people out there, these candles make excellent party tricks.

Step 6: Usefull Extra's

What if you found the perfect size box for yourself and filled it with everything you need, but there still is some room for more. Here are some things you can put in which can be usefull.

Step 7: Example - My Personal Tinderbox

So now we covered all parts of fire making using stuff out of a tinderbox. Like I said before, I normally use an old storage can for cutting disks. The content of this box hasn't changed in the last two years. So to give an example of a possible tinderbox here is what I take with me:

Plot

The story opens with a poor soldier returning home from war. He meets a witch, who asks him to climb into a hollow tree to retrieve a magic tinderbox. The witch gives the man permission to take anything he finds inside the chambers, but he must return the tinderbox.

Sources and influences

Andersen based “The Tinderbox" on the Scandinavian folk tale "The Spirit in the Candle". In the folk tale, a soldier acquires a magic candle which has the power to summon an iron man to do his bidding. The soldier uses the candle to visit a princess, and summons the iron man to save his life when he is sent to the stake for doing so.

Composition

On New Year's Day 1835, Andersen wrote his friend Henriette Hanck: "I am now starting on some 'fairy tales for children'.

Publication

"The Tinderbox" is one of Andersen's first fairy tales. It was published in Copenhagen, Denmark by C. A. Reitzel on 8 May 1835 in an unbound 61-page booklet as the first installment of the first collection of Andersen's Fairy Tales Told for Children with "Little Claus and Big Claus", " The Princess and the Pea ", and "Little Ida's Flowers".

Danish critical responses, 1836

The first reviews of Andersen's tales appeared in 1836 and were unenthusiastic. Critics disliked the informal, chatty style of the tales and their lack of morals. The critic Carsten Hauch objected to the moral indifference of "The Tinderbox" but admired the delicate nobility of the Queen in " The Princess and the Pea ".

First English translation, 1846

Charles Boner was the first to translate "The Tinderbox" into English, working from a German translation rather than the Danish original. He missed the earthy, joking style of "The Tinderbox" in preference for the embellished, stilted literary diction of the period, and translated the king's, "We will not ...

Commentaries

Andersen biographer Jackie Wullschlager writes, " ["The Tinderbox"] is a confident, young man's tale—jaunty, brisk, and exhilarating.
