What is ChloraPrep™?

What are the side effects of ChloraPrep?
Symptoms may include wheezing/difficulty breathing, shock, facial swelling, hives, or rash. Use of ChloraPrep is contra-indicated where patients have shown previous hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine or isopropyl alcohol (see Section 4.3). If hypersensitivity or an allergic reaction occurs, stop use and seek medical help right away.
What is the difference between ChloraPrep and chlorhexidine?
Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic that fights bacteria. ChloraPrep One-Step (for the skin) is used to clean the skin to prevent infection that may be caused by surgery, injection, or skin injury. ChloraPrep One-Step may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
How do I use ChloraPrep One-Step?
ChloraPrep One-Step is for use only on the skin. Rinse the skin before applying ChloraPrep One-Step. Apply only enough medicine to cover the area you are treating. Do not apply this medicine to deep cuts, scrapes, or open skin wounds. To use ChloraPrep One-Step soap, apply only enough to cover the area you are treating.
What are the ingredients of ChloraPrep?
The active substances in ChloraPrep are 2% w/v chlorhexidine gluconate and 70% v/v isopropyl alcohol. The inactive ingredient in ChloraPrep is purified water. Like all medicines, ChloraPrep can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Can you be allergic to ChloraPrep?

Conclusions: Duraprep and Betadine were found to be superior to Chloraprep for skin decontamination prior to clean elective soft tissue hand surgery. The bacterial flora of the hand was found to be different from those of the shoulder and spine.
What can I take if allergic to ChloraPrep?
Consider using alternative antiseptics such as povidone-iodine, alcohols, benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride, or parachlorometaxylenol (PCMX) when any previous allergy to chlorhexidine gluconate is documented or suspected.
What to use if patient is allergic to ChloraPrep?
If a rash is noted or reported, the patient is examined. A topical steroid, hydrocortisone 1%, and a systemic antihistamine are recommended.
Does ChloraPrep contain Betadine?

Are chlorhexidine and Betadine the same thing?

Do not use on open skin wounds. Do not use on broken or damaged skin. In addition, direct contact with neural tissue or the middle ear must be avoided. Prolonged skin contact with alcohol containing solutions should be avoided.
Is chlorhexidine the same as ChloraPrep?
ChloraPrep contains chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine is known to induce hypersensitivity, including generalised allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock. The prevalence of chlorhexidine hypersensitivity is not known, but available literature suggests this is likely to be very rare.
