what is an open neutral outlet

by Tracey Denesik Published 3 years ago Updated 2 years ago

An open neutral outlet is a device that provides electricity to an electrical circuit. It is used to provide power across the entire range of circuits in a building, or to provide power for appliances not connected directly to the main circuit breaker. An open neutral outlet is a power outlet that has been wired incorrectly.

So, what exactly is an open neutral? An open neutral occurs when the neutral wire
neutral wire
Neutral is a circuit conductor that normally completes the circuit back to the source. Neutral is usually connected to ground (earth) at the main electrical panel, street drop, or meter, and also at the final step-down transformer of the supply.

What causes an open neutral?

By far the most common reason for a open neutral is a bad connection. Let that sink in for a minute. On most receptacles there are two ways to terminate the electrical wiring. One way is to strip the wire insulation off your wire and curl a hook of bare copper wire to tighten around a the device set screw.

What does it mean when an outlet has an open neutral?

If there's an open neutral, the outlets won't work, but they will still be energized. Use a plug-in circuit tester to check for an open hot or open neutral. If a string of lights or outlets tests for open neutral, you'll probably find the disconnection in the device closest to the panel.

What happens if you have an open neutral?

The voltage on a neutral wire is normally 0V (volts) on a live circuit. However, if a neutral wire is open, the voltage on the line side of this open neutral is 120V.

Can you get shock from neutral wire?

The neutral wire is normally at the same potential as the active wire in an AC circuit. So, if you touch the neutral wire at any point, you will not get a shock.

Does neutral wire have power?

To summarize: the hot wire carries electricity from the power supply and takes it to the load (lightbulb). Neutral wires take the used electricity from the load and bring it back to the power supply.

Is open neutral safe?

An open neutral is terrible; in fact, it is dangerous. When there's a loose wire connection, the neutral wire becomes abnormally hot and damages appliances in their wake. Most fires related to an electrical fault have an open neutral to blame. When the connection to the circuit breaks, it forms an arc.

What happens if neutral wire is not connected?

If the neutral wire disconnects, it would stop the flow of the electricity and break the circuit. The role of the neutral wire is to provide this path to the electrical panel to complete the circuit. The neutral wire is bonded to the earth ground inside the panel.

What happens if neutral is not grounded?

Grounding neutral provides a common reference for all things plugged into the power system. That makes connections between devices safe(r). 2. Without a ground, static electricity will build up to the point where arcing will occur in the switchgear causing significant loss in transmitted power, overheating, fires etc.

Does an outlet need a neutral?

You don't have the neutral conductor that you need for a receptacle outlet. The only way you could do this would be to change the 2-wire cable (from the light to the switch) out to a 3-wire cable.

Why do I have 120v on my neutral?

If you have a neutral wire removed from the neutral bus bar in your panel it is possible to see 120VAC on that wire if the circuit breaker for that circuit is turned on and there is a load connected to the circuit and load device is also turned on.

Can a loose neutral trip a breaker?

A circuit breaker can trip (or a fuse can blow) due to nothing more than a loose wire. This can happen even if the wire is still connected to an outlet, but the outlet's terminal screw isn't tightened enough.

What Is An Open Neutral Outlet?

In its simplest form, an open neutral outlet refers to one of two points where different electrical circuits come together. In this particular case, it involves both the ground and the neutral wiring.

Getting To The Root Cause Of The Problem

How do you know if any issue that you’re experiencing with an electrical outlet is due to open neutral wiring? If you know what you’re doing, you can typically find out with an electrical tester.

Why Is Open Neutral Wiring Used?

Believe it or not, open neutral wiring is used to keep electrical outlets from overheating. If you have an electrical outlet that has a short, you run the risk of seriously injuring yourself by doing something as simple as turning a light switch on and off, or plugging something in. The same is true for unplugging an appliance.

Other Types of Outlets

While on the subject, it’s also worth mentioning that there are certain types of outlets that are directly grounded themselves.

What voltage is on a neutral wire?

The voltage on a neutral wire is normally 0V (volts) on a live circuit. However, if a neutral wire is open, the voltage on the line side of this open neutral is 120V. You can get a shock from an open neutral wire.

Where is the ground and neutral wire connected?

Open Neutral Wiring. In an electrical system, ground and neutral are connected together in one location only, at the neutral point. This connection is either at the power company transformer or in or near the main electrical panel of the dwelling (see Electrical Circuits ). The voltage on a neutral wire is normally 0V (volts) on a live circuit.

Is a phase breaker open?

A and B phase circuit breakers are closed. Neutral is open. A phase circuit breaker is open. In the diagram above left, the A phase breaker or switch is open. The neutral wire on the left side of the open (comes from the panel) is 0V. The wire on the right side of the open (goes to the load) is 120V to ground.

How to tell if a device is open neutral?

Another sign of an open neutral is electric shock. Electricity is still able to flow through the device with an open neutral, but the electricity can’t flow back through the panel. Since the device is still charged, it will result in an electric shock.

How to fix an open neutral?

1. Check the Voltage. In a normal outlet, you should have zero volts from neutral to ground. And hot to ground should have 120 volts. Use your multimeter to check the voltage of your wires. If your neutral is reading 120 volts, then the neutral wire is disconnected. 2.

How to unscrew a receptacle?

Unscrew the Receptacle. After the outlet cover is opened and the voltage checked, the receptacle will need to be unscrewed. Use your screwdriver to remove any screws holding the receptacle in place. 6. Check for an Open Neutral. Gently pull the receptacle to expose the wires. Look for the neutral wire.

What happens when neutral wire is loose?

If the neutral wire is loose, it can cause abnormal arcing around its connection point. As a result, the neutral wire will become abnormally hot. When it gets this hot, it will burn off its insulation and may cause damage to the surrounding areas. The arcing is very brief but extremely hot.

How many screws are on each side of a new receptacle?

The wires should be carefully removed from the current receptacle. When you put in the new receptacle, the receptacle will have two screws on each side. One side will have white screws.

What happens if more than one outlet is not working?

If more than one outlet is not working, the outlets may be daisy-chained together. It is sort of like on older Christmas lights where when one would go out, all would go out. Once you find out which outlet is the first in the row to not be working, it will likely be the source of your open neutral.

Why is it important to turn off the breaker?

After checking the voltage, it is important when dealing with anything electrical to turn off the power. This is to keep you for serious injury, like electrocution. Make sure to turn the breaker off at the source.
