You can still do this using a keyhole saw, of course it will be hard work to get an accurate result, but it can result in a proper job if you have good manual skills.#N#No need to worry about cutting oil, as cast iron is best cut dry, but no matter how you make the cut, you will end up with cast iron chips inside the housing. Unless you have completely stripped down your machine before you did the cut, like I had to do to mount the housing securely on the milling machine table, protect bearings left in the housing (typically pulley bearings) to prevent contamination. Clean the housing well to remove chips. You may want to use a vacuum cleaner for cast irons chips, as they are very fine, almost powdery.

You might be missing teeth on the pinion gear....you'll have to pull it apart to find out. It's fix-able, but may take some money to get a new gear and maybe custom bored / keyed to fit.

Is it "jumping" like maybe a tooth is missing from the gear or pinion, or is it more like smooth and sticky points along the vertical travel? If it's the latter, it still might be lubrication.

The spring loaded mechanism that returns the quill to the upward position may be too tight and binding the pinion shaft. There is usually a nut or two on the side opposite the handle to adjust its side play.
