Which type of water is the most dense?
Terms in this set (36)
- [OH-] = 1x10^2
- [H+]=1x10^-8
- [H+]=1x10^-3
- [OH-]= 1x10^-12
Which of the three states of water is most dense?
Water is present as vapor in:
- Atmosphere of the Sun: in detectable trace amounts
- Atmosphere of Mercury: 3.4%, and large amounts of water in Mercury's exosphere
- Atmosphere of Venus: 0.002%
- Earth's atmosphere: ≈0.40% over full atmosphere, typically 1–4% at surface; as well as that of the Moon in trace amounts
- Atmosphere of Mars: 0.03%
- Atmosphere of Ceres
What form of water has the highest density?
- Real gases have small attractive and repulsive forces between particles and ideal gases do not.
- Real gas particles have a volume and ideal gas particles do not.
- Real gas particles collide in-elastically (loses energy with collisions) and ideal gas particles collide elastically.
Which water sample is the least dense?
- 3 150 ml beakers (or use glass jars or clear plastic cups)
- 10 ml graduated cylinder (or tall, narrow glass)
- pipet
- water
- salt
- sugar
What is the definition of density?
Density is a measure of the amount of mass contained in a unit of volume.
How does density affect a substance?
Density depends on temperature and pressure. For solids, it's also affected by the way atoms and molecules stack together. A pure substance can take many forms, which don't have the same properties. For example, carbon can take the form of graphite or diamond. Both are chemically identical, but they do not share an identical density value.
Is water a solid or a liquid?
Unlike most substances, water is denser as a liquid than as a solid. A consequence is that ice floats on water. Also, pure water is less dense than seawater, so fresh water can float on top of salt water, mixing at the interface.
