Anatomy of a Rosary
These instructions will help you make a five-decade rosary using one of the more traditional methods of simple wire loop connections. This type of loop in loop connecting of beads is sometimes referred to as a rosary chain. Other methods used to make rosaries are bead stringing and wire wrapped loop connections.
Rosary Tools
To make a rosary, the following basic wire jewelry making tools are needed:
Rosary Medallion Connectors and Crosses
Another thing that characterizes the rosary beside the pattern of the beads is the medallion connector and cross or crucifix. These are available in a wide variety of sizes, styles, and patterns. The rosary center is a three-way connector and may have a Saint or other significant image on it.
Assembling Rosary Chain
The traditional structure of rosary prayer beads is five groups of 10 beads (decades) separated by an additional bead.
Adding Chain and Bead Spacers
The separator beads are slightly larger than the main beads and they are joined to the decade bead segments with a piece of chain. Traditionally, about three links of chain are used, but it may vary depending on the size and type of chain used.
Attaching the Decade Beads and Rosary Medallion
To connect the decade bead strands, using your chain nose pliers, open the loop on one side of the decade ten bead strand. Add the connector bead by slipping the chain segment onto the loop and closing the loop. Repeat until all five decade bead segments are connected.
Completing the Rosary
The shorter strand on a rosary is connected to the main strand by the rosary connector. This strand is made up of a connector bead, three decade beads, a connector bead, and then a crucifix or cross. The connector beads are joined to the decade beads with a segment of chain, as are the rosary medallion and cross.
Step 1
Remove the pedals from the roses. A single rose can be used to make half a dozen beads. Put your pedals in a cooking pot and add enough water to cover all of the rose pedals. Simmer on low heat until your rose pedals are malleable.
Step 2
Remove the rose pedals from the cooking pot and place them inside a blender. Add 1/4 tsp. of water in the blender with the rose pedals. If you want your rosary beads to have a stronger rose fragrance, then use water that was used to simmer the petals. Blend the rose pedals and water until they become a pulp substance and let it cool off.
Step 3
Remove the rose pedal pulp from the blender. Roll a bead sized amount of it into a bead shape and leave it to dry. Do this with the entire rose pulp substance. While they are drying, gently turn them over every other hour so that they will dry evenly. Do not let them completely dry before you move on to the next step.
Step 4
As soon as the beads feel firm, push a needle through them to give each of them one hole. Make each hole wide enough to insert your string through them. Allow them to completely dry before using them to make your rosary jewelry.
How does it work?
Place your order over the web site, by letter or phone. You can order the beads alone, or as part of a custom rosary. You can choose the bead size, shape and color (8mm round dark red is the most common, and what we make unless you specify otherwise).
How much does it cost?
For the beads alone, the cost is $0.50 per bead, or $30 for enough for one rosary (60 beads). Custom rosaries start at about $65 with silver-plated parts. Gold plated, sterling silver, gold filled, 14k, flexwire and cord rosaries are also available. The price depends on the current cost of selected parts, and can vary.
More Information about Our Processes
There are many different processes for making rose petal rosary beads, most of which involve boiling a large number of petals and mixing them with various organic ingredients. We do it a little differently because we not only wish to preserve the flowers, but want to make sure that the finished bead is going to last as long as possible.
Close-up Image of Sample Beads
Polymer clay beads are available in almost any color, even mixed/swirled colors. They are smoother and the rose petal particles are visible in the clay. We recommend polymer clay and use it by default.
After Ordering..
Once you place your order, please send your dried rose petals to us in a padded paper envelope (the petals are easily dried on a tray in an oven set to low heat). Our address is at the bottom of every web page. We will need at least the petals from one entire flower for each set of rosary beads.
Common Questions
How do I preserve the flowers? It is best for us if they arrive already dried. They do not need to be on the stem. We remove the petals from the stem anyway and use only the petals in the clay.
Do-it-yourselfers
If you would like to make the beads yourself (using organic methods that can be performed on a stove-top, but which might not last as long as kiln-fired beads), here are some links to recipes:
Rose Petal Beads
Chop rose petals into small pieces. Put the pieces into a saucepan or skillet and cover with water, simmering for an hour. Add a bit of rose oil to the pot and simmer for an hour 4 or 5 times in one day until the petal mixture begins to look like clay.
Rose Petal Bead Rosary
Add a bead tip to the end of your cord. String on 10 medium beads, knotting between each one. String on one large bead and add a knot. Repeat the previous two steps three more times and then string on the final 10 medium beads and knot between. Finish off with another bead tip.
Where to find rosary parts
Nylon cord and bead tips are available in craft and bead stores, but you may have to check other sources for center pieces, crosses, and crucifixes.
