M4-07 we use the 3.3 mm tap drill M4-05 we use the 3.5 mm drill M4-035 we use the 3.6 mm drill bit As per the ISO metric screw thread standard, the thread depth should be 0.614 x pitch, which is why a smaller pitch number also results in a lower thread depth value.

How to find tap drill size?
- Hold the gauge against the light and see if there are any gaps between the gauge and threads.
- Get an OD caliper and measure the male thread caliper and the female thread caliper.
- Make sure you use a seat angle gauge and place it on a flared surface. The centerlines need to be parallel with the gauge to ensure there is no leak.
How to match a drill to thread tap size?
- A good tap drill is 85% (± 2 pp) of major diameter for coarse threads, and
- A good tap drill is 90% (± 2 pp) of major diameter for fine threads.
- For metric V threads, the concept of major minus pitch (i.e., the major or widest diameter of the intended screw in millimeters minus the pitch of the threads of that ...
What is the formula for tap drill size?
There are two types of Hand Taps:
- Taper Tap. A taper tap has quite a lot of taper to help it ease into cutting threads gradually.
- Bottoming Tap.
- Plug Tap.
- Spiral Point Taps (Gun Nose or Bull Nose Taps)
- Spiral Flute Taps or Gun Taps.
- Interrupted Thread Tap.
- Pipe Taps.
- Form or Roll Taps (Thread Forming Taps)
What size drill for 1 tap?
The best drill bit size for 1/8″ NPT tap is a R drill bit. NPT taps are generally straight or tapered in shape depending on the type of job you use it for. There are markings on the shank of the drill bit above the thread. You will find the drill bit diameter stamped near the markings. The diameter is usually written infractions.
What size drill do I need for a tap?
A good tap drill is 90% (± 2 pp) of major diameter for fine threads. For metric V threads, the concept of major minus pitch (i.e., the major or widest diameter of the intended screw in millimeters minus the pitch of the threads of that screw in millimeters per thread) yields a good tap drill diameter.
What is tap drill chart?
Knowing the right tap drill size to use for your screws or bolts is nearly impossible to determine without the use of a good tap drill chart. A tap drill chart is an essential reference tool that every machinist should have readily accessible and at hand.

What size is a tap thread?
This measures 26.44mm across the outside diameter - roughly 1" The picture shows the measurement for a standard 3/4" tap thread. If your tap looks like this, you have a standard 3/4" BSP tap. It is a very common mistake to assume that the 1" outside diameter measurement means you have a 1" BSP tap.
How is tap thread size measured?
Use a ruler to measure across the thread diameter where the connector would attach. Include all the thread in your measurement. Now you've got your tap thread measurement, you can easily work out which tap connector is compatible for your tap.

How do you read a drill index?
Typical drill bits have markings somewhere on the shank above the threads. It's small, but it usually has the drill-bit diameter stamped into the metal; the number is written in fractions. For example, the markings may read: 1/4-inch, 3/6-inch or 25/32.

Getting Started
Before we start cutting our threads there are a few factors that we need to know to guarantee we cut correctly:
Threads types
In the charts, you will see many different abbreviations for threads, knowing the meaning of each will help you determine which size of tap to use for your application. Below are the meanings of the various abbreviations and a short description of each. For more information read our articles on thread design and thread standards.
Tap and drill sizes
The chart below is used for tapping female threads into a component. First, identify what screw size you will be using. This will correlate to the tap size. Based on this size, you should use the corresponding drill size for the hole.
Pipe thread drilled hole sizes
The chart below is used for creating male threads on a component to create a bolt or threaded pipe. First, identify what size threads you want on the outside of the component with the thread nominal size column. Then, based on the thread standard/type that you need you can determine the minimum outside diameter of the component for the threads.
Standard tap and drill chart (inch)
The tap and drill below is for standard gauge threads (inch). Simply look for the correct TPI and the desired tap percentage. From this and the corresponding outer diameter, you can determine the correct tap and drill sizes. The two formulas below are for calculating the needed drilled hole size (inch).
Metric tap and drill chart
The tap and drill chart below is for Metric threads. Simply look for the correct TPI and the desired tap percentage. From this and the corresponding outer diameter, you can determine the correct tap and drill sizes. The two formulas below are for calculating the needed drilled hole size (metric).
