How do server saves work?

Server saves are there to save the data of everybody, so if the server crashes they can look back at the latest server save before the crash, and reset it to that point. Community content is available under CC-BY-SA unless otherwise noted.

How do I log in to Wikipedia using the secure server?

However, you can log in there using your normal Wikipedia account, and you can be logged in to the secure server and the normal servers at the same time. When using the secure server, most local links automatically use the secure server.

What are the functions of servers?

Servers can provide various functionalities, often called "services", such as sharing data or resources among multiple clients, or performing computation for a client. A single server can serve multiple clients, and a single client can use multiple servers.

What is a server in computing?

The term server highlights the role of the machine in the traditional client–server scheme, where the clients are the workstations using the storage. A file server does not normally perform computational tasks or run programs on behalf of its client workstations.

What is file server security?

Security. File servers generally offer some form of system security to limit access to files to specific users or groups. In large organizations, this is a task usually delegated to directory services, such as openLDAP, Novell's eDirectory or Microsoft's Active Directory .

What is a dedicated file server?

A dedicated server is designed specifically for use as a file server, with workstations attached for reading and writing files and databases.

What is NAS storage?

Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS devices specifically are distinguished from file servers generally in a NAS being a computer appliance – a specialized computer built from the ground up for serving files – rather than a general purpose computer being used for serving files (possibly with other functions). In discussions of NASs, the term "file server" generally stands for a contrasting term, referring to general purpose computers only.

What is the primary piece of hardware equipment for servers?

The primary piece of hardware equipment for servers over the last couple of decades has proven to be the hard disk drive . Although other forms of storage are viable (such as magnetic tape and solid-state drives) disk drives have continued to offer the best fit for cost, performance, and capacity.

Is a database server a file server?

Database servers, that provide access to a shared database via a database device driver, are not regarded as file servers even when the database is stored in files, as they are not designed to provide those files to users and tend to have differing technical requirements.

Where are savers located?

Savers in Boston, Massachusetts. Savers, Inc. headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, U.S., is a privately held for-profit thrift store chain offering second hand shopping. An international company, Savers has more than 315 locations throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia, and receives its merchandise by paying money to non-profit ...

What is a saver business?

Business. Savers' business model involves partnership with local non-profits and purchasing and reselling donated items. The non-profits collect and deliver donated goods to Savers, which pays them for the items at a bulk rate regardless of whether they ever make it to the sales floor.

Why did Savers Value Village partner with Savers Value Village?

By the early 2000s many organizations, like the Association of Community Living, partnered with Savers/Value Village because they believed it was too expensive to do the pickups and resell to used goods merchants . Many of the contracts these organizations signed with Savers/Value Village offer a very small return compared to the (perceived) large amounts of money Savers/Value Village retains. According to an article that appeared in the Alberta Report in 1996 "According to the Times, for every $1.00 that went to undersigned charities from some Ellison-owned thrift stores, $2.55 went to the Ellison associates".

What is the Minnesota Attorney General's suit against Savers?

Controversy. In May 2015, the Minnesota Attorney General filed suit claiming that the corporation was misleading the public. The Attorney General pointed out, for example, that Savers pays only a very small percentage to the non-profit charities which partner with Savers (and for items other than clothing, nothing).

How does a secure server work?

There are several situations when the secure server can be useful: 1 Using the secure server gives some protection against eavesdropping, and most of all it protects against others snooping your Wikipedia password or cookie (for example with tools like Firesheep ). Eavesdropping is a problem especially when connecting through a wireless network, a company or school network, or a public computer such as an Internet café. 2 Some users have a bad Internet connection that intermittently mangles characters. This can cause all kinds of weird problems while editing pages. This mostly happens when connected over wireless or mobile networks. Using the secure server fixes this, since the secure connection has much better error detection than the normal connections. 3 Some Internet access points (such as public Wi-Fi networks at some hotels or cafes) inject banner ads into all kinds of web pages including Wikipedia; using the secure server prevents this.

Do scripts go through secure servers?

Some links take you back to the normal servers. (Learn more in the sections below.) Most scripts and css are loaded through the secure server, but if you add scripts or gadgets that make connections to external services then these might break the secure connection.

Do you have to be logged in to use the secure server?

Logged in or not. You don't have to be logged in to use the secure server. However, if you have a Wikipedia account, be aware that the secure server handles login separately from the normal servers, so when you go to the secure server for the first time, you won't be logged in there.

Is Wikimedia secure server still supported?

The old secure server with URLs like https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/ has been deprecated since October 2011 and is no longer supported. As of 14 November 2012, it has been a redirect to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ .

Is Wikimedia a secure server?

Wikimedia used to have a designated secure server (2005–2011) that was used for accessing Wikimedia projects with an encrypted connection. In 2011, all the main web server addresses at Wikimedia started supporting encrypted connections. In 2013, encryption became the default for logged-in users.

2: Running and configuring the server

The only configuration value that needs to be passed is the port which the application should run on. By default, it listens on port 80 (http port). To run the server, there are two ways. Regardless of which method you use to run it, you can provide the port through the port environment variable.

Configuring ShareX

For easy configuration, this server comes with a config generator. Just access it on the domain you'd like to use, go to the settings of the user who's config you'd like to download, and click one of the download buttons.

Additional set-up

I recommend that you install a reverse proxy such as nginx, and with letsencrypt you can set up free https support. Please note that you must ensure that your proxy passes the host and X-Forwarded-Proto headers at a minimum. Express will trust these as it is set to trust proxies by default.

Summary

At the moment, the dedicated server is available for the Windows and Linux operating systems. It can currently only be installed using the Steam service (where it is listed in the user's library as a "tool") or its command line sibling SteamCMD.

Requirements

The Dedicated Server is currently provided for Windows and Linux 64-bit architectures using the amd64 platform (i. e. any relatively modern AMD or Intel 64-bit CPU). There are currently no plans for an ARM CPU-compatible build, so the Dedicated Server cannot be deployed to, for instance, a Raspberry Pi or new Microsoft Surface Pro.

Installation

You can install the server from your Steam library like you would install any other game. You might have to change your steam library filters to include tools but other than that the process does not differ from any other game.

Starting the server

Simply launch the Dedicated Server from Steam just like any other program. You will be able to find it in the Tools category rather than games. It will open a terminal window in which you can review the logs in real time.

Configuration

Initial configuration is made in the game by the first player connecting to a server and it largely boils down to giving the server a name and assigning an administration password. More settings are available through the in-game server manager. The server does not start any game on its own.

Port forwarding and firewall settings

Before you start, you will need to ensure that the following ports are reachable on your server so you might have to create firewall rules or configure port forwarding in your router, depending on your setup.

Console commands

Here are a list of known commands for dedicated servers, as of v5.0.4 the console tab in the server manager is the only way to execute commands

Force Links to The Secure Server

  • There is the {{sec link}} template that always creates a secure link. It can make both local links and links to other Wikimedia projects. You can for instance put that template on your user page and feed it the appropriate parameters to make a link to the project, language and page that you want. If you need to reach a non-English version of one of the projects, then {{sec link}} can do th…
