Is foam necessary in a boat?

Yes, you need the foam IF you want to boat to float as intended when swamped and you must use closed cell foam so it won't absorb water. Whatever you do, do NOT use consumer spray foam designed for sealing air gaps around the house. Most of these foams are not closed-cell and therefore will absorb water like a sponge.

Does adding foam to a boat help it float?

Flotation foam can be an important addition for sink-proofing, thermal insulation, and soundproofing such boats as sailboats, jon boats, aluminum v-hull fishing boats, speed boats, canoes, bass boats, and pontoon boats. It can also help keep floating docks riding higher in the water when loaded down with weight.

Will spray foam work in a boat?

If you are a boat owner, you need to be aware of boat flotation. Closed cell foam is an ideal product to use for buoyancy, and Versi-Foam® is one of the easiest closed cell foam kits to use for this purpose. A boat's job is to float.

I was surfing the other night when I came across a nice site that built aluminum powerboats. This company used polystyrene in the hull instead of pour-able or sprayed two part polyurethane. The reasoning behind this was the poly, when wet, caused a reaction with the aluminum which caused corrosion of the hull.

In my experience it doesnt matter what kind of foam you use, if water gets in between it and the hull, you will get corrosion. Unless your floatation foam is enclosed in a watertight chamber, It WILL get wet and eventually soak up a lot of water (which of course defeats it's purpose) This water comes from rain, waves, forgetting the drain plug etc.

I always specify that the inside surface of a foam sprayed alloy hull should have a good and thorough paint preparation including a zinc rich primer and several coats of epoxy. No foam below the waterline. But still paint the bilge the same. Had one workboat that holed its unpainted Al.

Is pourable foam good for boats?

I prefer pourable foam because it can form a mechanical bond with aluminum hulls that hold it in place and closed-cell foam sheets because the closed-cell foam is waterproof and won’t absorb water as long as it remains in good condition. I believe a combination of pourable foam and closed-cell foam sheets is the ideal fit for most boats.
