Is there a manual for OpenWebStart?
This is no manual for general usage of OpenWebStart. In case of an error! If the start results in an error, please first read the existing articles on the FAQ / Troubleshooting page, before contacting the support units. We will document common problems and their solutions there.
How to start the aftersales applications in OpenWebStart?
To start the Aftersales applications OpenWebStart must download download a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and store it in a local directory. In the .jnlp file, which launches the application, we define which JVM exactly has to be downloaded by OWS.
Why did Mercedes-Benz replace Oracle Java with OpenWebStart?
Therefore the Mercedes-Benz AG decided to replace the usage of Oracle Java with the new product OpenWebStart (OWS), provided by the Swiss company Karakun AG. OpenWebStart will keep on enabling the same reliable, long-term and secure provision of Java Web Start technology, but with an improved costing framework.
How do I change from terminal server to OpenWebStart?

OpenWebStart is an open source software package that must be installed locally on the workstations of all application users. Please follow the installation instructions to set up OpenWebStart on your workstation. The User guide describes the usage of OpenWebStart.
What is OWS in Mercedes?
Therefore the Mercedes-Benz AG decided to replace the usage of Oracle Java with the new product OpenWebStart (OWS), provided by the Swiss company Karakun AG. OpenWebStart will keep on enabling the same reliable, long-term and secure provision of Java Web Start technology, but with an improved costing framework.
Does Oracle 11 support Java Web Start?
In 2017 Oracle decided to drop the support for Java Web Start. Starting with Java 11, the JWS has been removed from the JRE installation packages. This means, that clients that have the latest version of Oracle 11 JRE installed, can no longer launch applications through JWS.
Configuration
Typically no additional configuration of OpenWebStart is necessary. All required configuration options are already included in the installation package as provided by Mercedes-Benz AG. For more information, see the Administration Guide .
Proxy server configuration
If you use a proxy server to access the Internet, this must be configured in OpenWebStart:
JNLP settings in the JVM manager
Some settings, which derive from a standard installation of OpenWebStart are especially important for operation of the Aftersales applications. If you use the OWS installation package offered by us and install it according to our installation manual, then OpenWebStart will use these settings automatically when started.
Does OpenWebStart require admin privileges?
The installation of OpenWebStart requires administrator privileges. It only installs the binaries, but does not create user settings. The user settings are stored in the user's local profile in the %userprofile%.config folder. Downloaded files (JVMs and the application JAR file to start) are cached in the %userprofile%.cache folder.#N#On first start of OWS by a standard user, OWS checks if the .config directory and the deployment.properties file exist. If not, OWS creates a new deployment.properties file based on default values available in C:Program FilesOpenWebStart.install4jresponse.varfile . In case the required deployment.properties in the user profile needs more sophisticated settings, you may also create or provide the file over the course of the user's logon process (logon script).
Does Mercedes Benz AG have Aftersales?
Mercedes Benz AG ensures that the Aftersales applications work correctly with specific OpenWebStart versions. It is recommended to deactivate the automatic program update integrated in OpenWebStart to make sure only supported versions are installed.

Can OpenWebStart be uninstalled?
Important: Although OpenWebStart is being displayed in the "Apps & Features" in the "Windows Settings", it cannot be uninstalled correctly there. Please follow exactly the following steps for a proper removal of your "non admin" installation: Make sure, you are logged in as the correct "non admin" user.
Is OpenWebStart installed on Oracle?
Oracle Java is installed on your system, and OpenWebStart wasn't installed at all, or it was installed additionally, without removing Oracle Java. The Java Web Start of Oracle can't process some attributes of the JNLP file and asks the user how to proceed further:
Common information about the installation
When installing OpenWebStart, the file extension JNLP will be linked in Windows to OpenWebStart. Oracle Java will no longer be used to launch JavaWebStart applications and can be uninstalled, if it's not needed anymore by other applications on your workstation.
