The first EQG movie takes place between season 3 and 4. Rainbow Rocks takes place between season 4 and 5. After that they become more of a standalone series, with the 4th movie (Legend of Everfree) not even having any ponies in it at all. You probably should watch the MLP movie before watching season 8 + 9, though.
