Hijo de Demetrio Mujica Terra y Lucy Cordano Giorello; por línea paterna, José Mujica es descendiente de vascos, que hacia 1840 llegaron a Uruguay, con origen en la localidad vizcaína de Múgica. Por línea materna, su ascendencia es italiana. Nació el 20 de mayo de 1935 en el barrio Paso de la Arena, del departamento de Montevideo.
Carrera política
Su tío materno, Ángel Cordano, era nacionalista y tuvo influencia sobre la formación política de Mujica. En 1956, José Mujica conoció al entonces diputado nacionalista Enrique Erro por vía de su madre, militante del mismo sector que Erro.
