Gypsum

I’ve mentioned gypsum previously in this article, but haven’t exactly covered what it is. Gypsum is an essential part of plasterboards and the cause for much of the fire resistance that insulated plasterboards have.

Polystyrene

Another element that can play a big part in making fire-resistant insulated plasterboards is polystyrene. Polystyrene is a synthetic resin used for lightweight, but rigid, foams and films. As an example, styrofoam is basically just an expanded version of it.

Types Of Insulated Plasterboard

There is more than one type of insulated plasterboard. The type of board you have will probably affect the amount of fire resistance of the board. Here are some types of insulation plasterboards:

What elements go into fire resistant plasterboard Building Regulations?

The fire resistance performance of plasterboard is based on several building ‘elements’. These elements include walls, floors, ceilings and partitions. Plasterboard in this instance only forms part of these overall constructions. HTM05 and BB100 documents require a minimum period of fire resistance provided by these ‘elements’.

How many minutes make up fire resistance in plasterboard?

No matter the ‘element’, the linings in the plasterboard will have metal studs and screw fixings which also make up the whole ‘system’ of fire resistance performance. All components make up the performance (expressed in periods of resistance in minutes – usually from 30-120). Plasterboard cannot be considered fire resistant on its own.

is standard plasterboard that would be fitted into ceiling in a domestic property provide any form of fire protection?

Plumbcrazy New Member

This is a topic that stirs debate.... do a search and spend a while sifting through the results.

electrical? New Member

cost is the point for the tennents.. downlighter inc lamp is about £6 + vat for a good one.. plus £10 for the hood +vat. if they want 6 off then your looking at £96 plus vat plus labour...and if there not nessary then its a waste of money.

What's above the ceiling, habitable space or loft? If habitable then fire break and regs says fit hoods, but it is not always enforced by BC, depends on how the inspector feels about this contensious issue. But can you not sell the point of hoods means safe and therefore worth the extra $$$ to the client?

electrical? New Member

it is habbitable above. if the regs to state they must be used then they must be used..rule no 1 always cover your self by doing it properly first time.

electrical? New Member

any idea what time factor the break would be rated at? depends on selection of fire hood

Plumbcrazy New Member

30 mins fire rating for regs (hope it's not 9.5mm board or you would need to overboard with another layer of 9.5mm in theory).
