It is quite possible that different sugars are metabolized differently; mannose and maltose differ from sucrose. However, I find it hard to believe that an excess of fructose over glucose makes much difference, given that household sugar (sucrose) is a 1:1 compound of glucose and fructose that easily dissociates to its components in the gut.

I'm fairly certain that there was a period several years ago when Karo included some HFCS. I stopped using it to make toffee for that reason. Nowadays it is HFCS-free.
