His marriage was short-lived, however, as he divorced but gained full custody of the child. During this time, he fully committed to acting and wanted to work in theatre, taking lessons at the Ballet Arts Company, leading him to land his first role in a production of “Kill the One-Eyed Man”. In 1968, he became a part of the play “The Great White Hope”, which would later become a film adaptation of the same name.
