GBS is not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease or infection as it can occur on its own even in someone with no prior sexual experience. However, bacteria can be passed between sexual partners, including through oral contact. Carrying GBS is not a sign of poor hygiene and illness. Anyone can carry GBS.

Symptoms

To practice good hygiene, you should:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
  • Put your used tissue in the waste basket
  • Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands, if you don’t have a tissue
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available

Causes

Treatment of GBS. The medical treatment of group B Strep vaginitis may be a combination of topical lactobacilli probiotics plus antibiotics. Partners should be treated also. Identification failure and misdiagnosis of group B strep. Some GBS isolates are thought to be less common, which may contribute to misdiagnosis.

Prevention

no need to induce. They just give you antibiotics once in labor and if you come in and far along they will give it too you full blown so don't worry!

Like many bacteria, GBS may be passed from one person to another through skin-to-skin contact, for example, hand contact, kissing, close physical contact, etc. As GBS is often found in the vagina and rectum of colonised women, it can be passed through sexual contact.

Causes

  • Many healthy adults carry group B streptococcus in their bodies and it is transmitted to the infants during vaginal delivery when they swallow fluid containing the group B strep.
  • Older adults or those with certain chronic conditions with weak immunity can develop serious infections
  • The risk factors include:
  • An infant is at high risk of developing group B strep disease if:
  • The mother tested positive for group B streptococcus
  • The baby is born prematurely
  • The mother's water breaks 18 hours or more before delivery
  • The mother has an infection of the placental tissues and amniotic fluid
  • The mother has a urinary tract infection during the pregnancy
  • The mother has fever during labour

Prevention

To prevent the spread of bacteria to the baby during labor, the doctor can give IV antibiotics, usually penicillin or clindamycin when labor begins.
