How far can a 12 inch I joist span?

When supporting joists that span 12 feet with no overhang beyond the beam, a double ply beam can span in feet a value equal to its depth in inches. A double 2x12 beam can span 12 feet; a (2) 2x10 can span 10 feet and so on.

How are I joist made?

LP® SolidStart® I-Joists feature an advanced design and tough build for superior performance:

  • Combines laminated veneer lumber (LVL) or finger-jointed sawn wood flanges with a web of oriented strand board (OSB) to produce an I-shaped structural member.
  • Both materials work together to resist deflection, bending stresses and shear.
  • LVL and MSR lumber flanges up to 3-1/2˝ wide for greater stability.

What are I joists?

The I-joist is a manufactured wood joist, constructed of either machine stress rated (MSR) lumber or laminated veneer lumber, that is lightweight and easy to handle but able to carry heavier loads than dimensional wood. These joists include wide flanges that give greater surface area for nailing and more support for floor sheathing.

What is an I joist floor system?

  • Reduces floor “bounce”
  • Easy to install
  • A cheap solution for solving floor movement

How far will a 11 7 8 I-joist span?

Span refers to the length of the I-joist. The L/480 table with a 40 per square foot live load and a 20 per square foot dead load with a depth of 11 7/8 inches will give you spans according to joint weight. With these factors, the lightest joist will have a maximum span of 17 feet, 8 inches.

Are I-joist cheaper?

I-beams are increasingly taking over in new residential construction. In new construction, it is cheaper to use engineered joists in some cases. For instance, it is possible to use half the number of I-beams compared to 2x10s since I-beams can span further with center support.

Which is better L 360 or L 480?

I prefer to go with a span chart that uses L/480 for the live load. That means L/360 is implied for the total load deflection, and it will result in much better floor performance. With roof trusses, the typical deflection limit is L/240 for live load, and L/180 for total load.

Are I-joists stronger than timber?

Are I joists stronger than timber? I joists are specifically designed to offer strength in areas that dimensional lumber is incapable of. They can span greater distances, and are considered to be 50% stiffer than dimensional timber under traditional frame spacing.
