Waiting Period

Attempting to paint your paintable wallpaper before the adhesive dries can cause wallpaper to bubble, which can detract from the finish of your walls. Both Brewster Home Fashions and Graham and Brown, who manufacturer paintable wallpaper, recommend waiting 36 hours after installation for adhesives to dry and set prior to painting.

Primer

Both Brewster Home Fashions and Graham and Brown suggest priming your walls with wallpaper primer prior to installing paintable wallpaper. Not only does primer create a smooth surface for wallpaper, but priming also makes wallpaper easier to remove in the future.

Painting

There is no need to use special paint when finishing your paintable wallpaper. Any type of paint can be used with this material -- you can even mix glazes and other finishes to create metallic and other special effects. Once you've painted your wallpaper, you can paint it over and over again to change the color as desired.

Unpainted Wallpaper

Despite its name, paintable wallpaper doesn't require painting. Some designers or homeowners prefer the clean, richly-textured look of unpainted wallcoverings. Left unpainted, these wallcoverings can be used to mimic the look of wood or plaster reliefs, traditional beadboard, or even fabric wallcoverings.
