how long can rca cables run

by Emory Pfeffer Published 3 years ago Updated 2 years ago

Composite RCA - 100 feet (regular); 250 feet (with extender)
Being analog, the image quality can degrade at longer lengths but the loss is not noticeable at 100' or shorter. It is possible to go up to 300' with a regular cable, but the quality level will vary.

How long can a RCA audio cable run?

Searching the Internet, RCA Audio Cable can be easily run 30m (100ft) if they are well build, and top out around 100 feet to perhaps 200 feet. (30m to 60m)

Do RCA cables have a finite length limit?

Unbalanced leads (standard RCA's) do have a finite length limit. You may be able to get away with long leads with high level signals. Any cartridge will not sound its best with long TT leads. But would it matter if your using a Moving coil cart?

How far can I extend my RCA cable?

It is possible to go up to 300’ with a regular cable, but the quality level will vary. A balun can be used to extend composite RCA using ethernet, but it only works for the audio (red and white) cables. It is unavailable for the video (yellow) cable.

What is an RCA cable?

RCA cables have been in existence since the early 1940s, connecting Victrola turntables to radio systems. Since then, the cabling type has expanded into multichannel surround sound, video and digital audio applications.

Does length of RCA cable affect quality?

Yes, cable length does matter when it comes to sound quality, and it is something you will need to consider.

How long can you run RCA cable to subwoofer?

how long can RCA subwoofer cable runs be? At least 100 feet. There's no issue with the sound quality, but the longer the cable the greater the potential for ground loop hum.

Do longer RCA cables make a difference?

The longer a cable runs, the more chances are that it gets sound degradation not only because of the distance but also because of the noise it can pick up on the way there.

Does audio cable length affect sound quality?

When long runs (of either interconnects or speaker cables) are used, cable quality becomes extra important. Due to the additional signal losses longer runs impose, the better the cable is at “protecting” the signal, the better will be the sound.

Why do subwoofers have 2 RCA inputs?

Dual input allows the subwoofer an extra sensitivity adjustment. Normally, it would be enough to use a mono LFE subwoofer signal from its processor. If you have a processor with very low output so you can use a Y-splitter. By using both inputs with the same mono signal doubles the subwoofer sensitivity.

Can I use RCA instead of speaker wire?

Can you take a standard RCA cable, cut the ends off and use it as a speaker cable? You could, but the gauge of that wire really isn't the right gauge for speaker cable use and will make your amp\receiver run hotter because of the resistance factor and therefore lower the quality of the sound.

How long should my RCA cable be?

Registered. "Most RCA audio cables that are built reasonably well with shielding can be run effectively from 100 to 200 feet." "With 2 Audio RCA, you can easily go 30 metres." This probably holds true for standard LIne Level signals which are measured in Volts.

Are thicker RCA cables better?

I believe the thicker cables offer better shielding/ protection against electrical noise that affect the analog signal being carried in the cable. If there is nothing around causing electrical noise, then getting thicker cables will not change anything.

Does the color of RCA matter?

If the cable is the same, the colors don't matter. The standard meaning is Red - Right, White - Left (audio), and Yellow - Video.

Are shorter RCA cables better?

Any differences in frequency response at those lengths would be into the hundreds of thousands of hertz or higher. One exception would be if you were using it to connect a passive volume control or an odd device with very high output impedance. Then the shorter the better.

How long can audio cables be?

2.5mm, 3.5mm (also called headphone cables), and ¼” audio cables have a maximum distance of 150' on average. Off-the-shelf, standard audio cables will be rated with 150' in mind. It is possible to go further by custom-making something using thicker cable than usual.

How long is too long for speaker wire?

The rule is the total resistance of the wire should be less than 5 percent of the rated impedance of the speaker. Your Insignias are 8-ohm speakers, which means 16 gauge is good for up to a 48-foot run (per speaker). Speaker wire of 14 gauge is good for an 80-foot run, and 12 gauge is good for 120 feet.

How far can RCA cables run?

Most RCA audio cables that are built reasonably well with shielding can be run effectively from 100 to 200 feet.

Which is better RCA or 3.5mm?

RCA connectors are better than 3.5mm connectors. The cable to which they are connected also makes a difference. On the subject of sound quality, good quality cables do make a significant difference in sound quality but there are many brands out there that make exaggerated claims and are ridiculously overpriced.

Does cable length affect sound quality?

Secondly, does cable length affect sound quality? Not only will this reduce the issue of tangling but will also not affect the quality of sound. The longer the length of the headphone cable, the higher the resistance. Therefore, it is important to buy headphones with shorter cables.

How far can you run a cable?

While 30m or 100ft seems to be the acceptable limit based on a quick search of Google, I would try to keep the cables as short as possible.

How far can you run balanced cables?

You can run balanced cables 100 feet with no problem at all. #2 is to spend about $40 on a decent wireless router and set up a home network, and then use a receiver in your family room that has wi-fi and can receive the audio from the computer through the wireless link/router.

Can you run a 55 foot cable?

There is nothing inherent that will prevent a 55 foot run, especially if good quality cable is used.

Does the RCA tuner have optical ports?

Well, the tuner it's going to get hooked up to is an older one and doesn't have any optical ports. (The good tuner is downstairs in the theater area). So the standard red/white RCA cables is my only option.

What is RCA cable?

This older analog signal is well tested but has largely been replaced with newer, digital cables. Being analog, the image quality can degrade at longer lengths but the loss is not noticeable at 100’ or shorter. It is possible to go up to 300’ with a regular cable, but the quality level will vary.

How far can a Toslink cable run?

Low-quality and older cables may only support optical signals up to 5 or 10 meters. Modern Toslink typically runs 15 meters, although some brand-new electronics (mainly computers and satellite receivers) can use up to 30 meters. If extra distance is needed, do not buy the least expensive Toslink cables you can find (you will get what you pay for).

How long is HDMI cable?

For example, a standalone HDMI cable can go up to 65’ while a standard DisplayPort cable can go up to 15’. Therefore, an HDMI to DisplayPort cable will be stuck at 15’ for its maximum length. Other factors such as electromagnetic interference or radio wave interference can also come into play.

How far can an Ethernet cable extend?

With an extender balun, ethernet cables can be used to extend s-video up to 650’. Keep in mind that a single ethernet cable can only go up to 328’. If extending the S-video past that, ethernet extensions will also be needed.

How far can a 2.5mm headphone cable go?

2.5mm, 3.5mm (also called headphone cables), and ¼” audio cables have a maximum distance of 150’ on average. Off-the-shelf, standard audio cables will be rated with 150’ in mind. It is possible to go further by custom-making something using thicker cable than usual. The lower the AWG, the greater the distance you can go.

How far can a 3.5mm cable go?

3.5mm can go up to 250’ by using a balun, which allows ethernet cable to be used as an extension.

Why shield cable?

Other factors such as electromagnetic interference or radio wave interference can also come into play. If the cable will be run near electrical cords or in an area near something like a radio tower, these issues can be mitigated by using shielded cables.

What is the most affected by the cable length and quality?

Low level signals such as these are obviously most affected by the cable length and quality.

Why is a short cable good?

A short cable is still desirable due to the chance of noise pickup, but once again that is less of an issue with a low output impedance cartridge.

What is a phono cable?

As has been mentioned, phono cables are all about matching cartridge output to phono amp input. Project audio, for example, make specific aftermarket cables for connection between turntables and phono amps. They could make them as short as possible but they don't.

Do phono stage cables need to be the same quality?

Yes, the cables should be of the same quality (in an ideal world), although if a compromise must be made, make it the phono stage to amp cable.

Can a low impedance cartridge drive a long cable?

If the cartridge has a low output impedance it can drive a long cable without worrying about high frequency attenuation , as the capacitance will not come into play unless the cartridge has a higher output impedance.

Is RCA connector sonic degradation?

There's also issues of sonic degradation at the points where two different metals meet, like RCA to RCA connections. I've eliminated the RCA connectors from my SME III arm, hard-wiring Canare Star-Quad to the tonearm's bare wire. The lower the signal level, the more significant the "small stuff" becomes.

Is a shorter cable better?

It is hard to be specific about how it "could" effect the sound. Of course a shorter cable is always "better" in theory for a few reasons. Im not sure there is one specific length that one goes beyond, that would cause the sound to be degraded, as it would be a combination of not only cable length, but its resistance and the cart and pre-amps specs in combination that would eventually cause more noise, RF pick up and a loss of highs.

At what RCA cable length does audio degradation occur?

I'm thinking of putting my turntable on a shelf about 50 ft. away, though in order to do that i'd need to run about a 50 ft. RCA cable to my receiver. Would there be any audio degradation @ 50 ft? I currently using a 15. ft cable. Also, if there isn't any audio degradation, can anyone recommend me some good 50 ft.

Looooong cables

In general I agree with everybody. By using those 50 foot cables or even those 15 foot cables, you run the risk of noticeable high frequency rolloff. But nobody has determined whether it's going to mess you up, or how badly it's going to mess you up.
