When doctors intially start a person with Type 2 diabetes on a slow acting insulin they start out with a very low dose, usually 10 units. This is prudent. One in ten "Type 2s" is not really a Type 2. Most of these misdiagnosed "type 2s" turn out to be people in the early stages of LADA, Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults, which is a a slow onset form of autoimmune diabetes. People with LADA usually have normal or near normal insulin sensitivity and for them an injection of ten units is a LOT of insulin. One or two percent of people diagnosed as Type 2 turn out to be people like me who have other oddball genetic forms of diabetes that also make them very sensitive to insulin. So starting everyone out at a low dose of insulin makes sense since this way the misdiagnosed people who turn out to have normal insulin sensitivity will avoid hypos caused by too much insulin. But once it is clear that a person really is a Type 2--since they see no response at all to a dose of 10 units of insulin, the doctor is supposed to raise the dose until it gets to the level where it will drop the fasting blood sugars. I keep reading that when you take insulin, you go into "fat storing mode" untill its outta your system, so I was wondering, how long is NOLVOLOG staying active everytime I take a shot? Everyone is different. From testing I have found that my body will use up all of my Novalog injection after about three hours. At about two hours my blood sugar begings to stabilize but goes down slightly afterwards. Most docs will tell you 4-6 hrs but keep in mind that's based on averages from people who process insulin very quickly to those who barely process it at all. In people without diabetes, the pancreas releases insulin throughout the day. The pancreas is an organ that sits near the stomach. Special cells in the pancreas, called beta cells, make insulin. In between meals, the pancreas releases a low level of insulin to help the body have enough energy. When you eat, your blood sugar (also known as blood glucose) rises. In people without diabetes, the pancreas releases more insulin when you eat to take sugar from the food you eat that is in your blood and bring it to the cells to be used as energy. This brings the blood sugar in the blood back down. Insulin works like a key, unlocking cells to help deliver sugar from the blood. Every cell in the body has a lock on its cell wall, called a receptor. Insulin fits into that lock like a key, allowing sugar to enter the cells. NovoLog is usually given together with another long-acting insulin. The most common side effect of NovoLog is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Symptoms of low blood sugar may include headache, nausea, hunger, confusion, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, sweating, tremor, trouble concentrating , confusion, or seizure (convulsions). Other common side effects of NovoLog include: injection site reactions (e.g., pain, redness, irritation). Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects of NovoLog including: signs of low potassium level in the blood (such as muscle cramps, weakness, or irregular heartbeat).
