how does febreze work

by Celestine Wintheiser PhD Published 4 years ago Updated 3 years ago

How Does Febreze Work? Febreze has a number of odor-trapping ingredients, cyclodextrin being the most important one. It sort of resembles a doughnut with a hole in the middle. When you spray Febreze, the air traps all odors, forming a complex in the doughnut’s hole. Since cyclodextrin traps the odor molecules, they can’t reach your odor receptors.

When you spray Febreze, the water in the product partially dissolves the odor, allowing it to form a complex inside the "hole" of the cyclodextrin doughnut shape. The stink molecule is still there, but it can't bind to your odor receptors, so you can't smell it.12-Sept-2019

The uninvited smell

Your old chemistry teacher would be pleased you could remember molecules. Some of these little fellows can smell very bad and that’s why we call them malodour molecules. And, like uninvited guests, these malodours can linger around your home – on your couch, in your kitchen, on your bed and of course in the air.

The OdourClear technology

The new OdourClear technology of Febreze seeks out odours in the air and eliminates them. So there is no hiding place for stinky molecules. Its proprietary formulas can include one or some of four odour-eliminating technologies, that work both together and independently like every great team should.

The fabulous four

Let’s introduce you to our famed four superheroes. Each and every one has a special skill to kill odours.

1. The odour trapper

Here it is – the “catcher” of odours, Cyclodextrin. In nature it’s made by some bacteria from corn starch. It mercilessly pulls odours into its centre and locks them up for good. The odour molecule is then permanently put out of circulation. These guys can be found in Febreze Air Effects.

2. The odour converter

These molecules easily bind to a broad range of bad odour molecules. Once they are connected, they become a new molecule, which doesn’t smell bad anymore. Bad smell is converted to no smell. They are especially efficient for long-term use and can be found in Febreze Plugs for example.

3. The odour neutralizer

The weapon of citric acids, found naturally in fruits such as lemons, is neutralisation. They do so by balancing the pH value of odours to the pH of water (that’s a neutral 7, just in case you were wondering). The perfect demonstration of how they work is in every bottle of Febreze Air Effects.

4. The odour magnet

You can find these magic magnets in Febreze Fabric Refresher. They are polymers specifically designed to eliminate odours in fabrics.

What is the purpose of Febreze?

The basic claim behind Febreze is that it isn’t just adding a new scent to items or the air, but rather that it’s eliminating it entirely. The process behind this is patented and involves the use of a special sugar molecule that acts to entrap offensive odors and remove them from our sense perception.

The nice thing about Febreze is that you don’t have to do too much to use it, all of their products are either set-and-forget or spray and walk away. In olden times, circa the 1990’s you had to keep a bottle of potpourri spray handy and use it to cover up a stinky room.

Does Febreze work?

The concept behind Febreze is a solid one, and it does seem to really work on eliminating odors and not just masking over them. Of course there are some products that get better reviews, so it’s not always a sure thing. Here are some of the products they offer that hit the nail on the head: Air Effects (all scents), Fabric Refreshers (all scents), Laundry Odor Eliminator, and their Allergen Reducer Air Freshener. These show strong user satisfaction, and you can be sure they’ll get the job done in your home as well. Some of the scents they make for other products don’t go over too well, but if you stick to the Gain scent, or their original scent you should be good to go.
