Remove the strainer cover lid and remove the drain plugs located on the bottom of the strainer body. Depending on your model of Hayward pump, there may be two plugs to remove.

Turn the pump on very briefly to remove any water in the impeller after the water has drained. Do not turn it on for more than a couple of seconds to prevent burning the seals.
Step 3
Using a Shop Vac, blow all the water out of the plumbing lines running between the filter equipment and the pool. Blow water out of each line from the filter to the return outlets and from the pump to the skimmers.
Step 4
Replace the strainer cover and drain plugs. Close the air relief valve on the filter and replace the drain plugs. Close the backwash valve. The pump is now ready for winter.

A sand filter is a sand filter whether it be on an AGP or IG I suggest trying my method after a few days of gravity draining through the bottom. You're sure are not going to get the volume out the bottom like you would blowing it. Whats the harm in taking the extra step & 5 mins to ensure a sand filter is drained properly for your customer rather than simply relying on a guess that the water is sufficiently drained out through the bottom. It may be sufficient for southern states but to dismiss a proper method for everyone in freezing climates is a disservice to others on this board.

To remove the remainder is to use a high volume shopvac to blow the filter out through your backwash line. You place your dial to Rinse then place your vac hose on the line from the pump (leave you gauge and sight glass in while doing this). When blowing the air forces the water up and out.

Those pools generally do not have the lines blown out. So, for an AGP owner, it makes no sense to go to the trouble to blow out a sand filter when its not really needed. If you noticed, i did say that if you are already blowing out the lines for an IG pool, sure, put the multiport on rinse and blow it out. But its not necessary.

I live in MA. In the past I've taken the whole filter into the garage. In doing so I cracked a lateral because of the sand shifting. This year I'm going to bring in the pump and take top off the filter bring that in also and then cover the rest of the filter with a heavy duty trash bag.

It is aslo recomended to put the valve leaver between settings to relieve the presssure on the gasket.

Are you in favor of removing the valve assembly (What I referred to as the 'head'? If so, what's the best way to cover the gaping hole? lol

Depends... If your comfortable that all the water is properly blown out or not. Also depends if your pipes can be easily disconnected without damage. I take mine off and cover the hole with a sheet of plastic. I hold the plastic in place using the ring clamp for the valve head.

What does the "winter" setting on the valve really do - close all inputs/outputs or relieve pressure as GHM stated ? My pool place recommended using a shop vac to suck out remaining water from the lower drain - ? Also curious as to the motor - is it better to cover it - or just let it sit ?

All the recommendations I've seen on this site is to bring the pump indoors.
