how do you measure a radial pull on a tire

by Valerie Turcotte Published 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago

How do you measure a radial pull on a tire? One way to tell if the problem is radial pull or not is to swap the two front tires/wheels with each other. If it pulls in the opposite direction, you have radial pull. If that's the case, try rotating the front tires directly to the rear.

Full Answer

What is a radial pull on tires?

Tire conicity or radial pull is usually different from a pull we feel with improper wheel alignment. A caster or camber related pull is normally constant, whatever the vehicle speed. This is because the misalignment does not change as the vehicle increases speed.

How do you check the runout on a radial tire?

Check radial (up-down) runout by placing block under rear of spinning tire and check the gap between the block and the tire tread area. This gap shouldn't exceed 0.1 inches for most passenger car tires.

How do I know if I have radial pull or not?

If it pulls in the opposite direction, you have radial pull. If that's the case, try rotating the front tires directly to the rear. Don't forget to also verify equal tire pressure while you're at it.

Is it normal to pull the tire to the right/left?

Moving the tire right/left is not normal. After unusual wear you will have a residual effect that will go away. This under no normal circumstance should be a pull, and certainly not to the center line. Roads are crowned ie it center is higher. A normal correct alignment should move you slightly to the shoulder on the right.

How is radial pull diagnosed?

Diagnosis is straight forward; temporarily cross the suspected tire to the other side and see if the vehicle pulls the other way, or stops pulling. We need no rocket science, because diagnosis of tire conicity is straight forward. We first drive the vehicle to confirm the problem.More items...•

What is radial tire pull due to?

Radial tire pull is a manufacturing defect in the tire itself, so don't worry; you didn't do anything wrong. It happens because the tire's internal components misalign during the curing process. This leaves the tire with a sort of cone shape, and that, in turn, makes the car pull to one side when you're driving.

Where is lateral and radial runout measured?

Use a tire run-out gauge or dial indicator to check radial and lateral run-out. Check the radial run-out of the rotating tire-wheel assembly at the center of the tread, preferably on a smooth rib. Check the lateral run-out in the center of the sidewall.

What is TYRE pull?

Tyre pull is a situation where a tyre pulls the car towards one side and is rather a common problem. But here is the reason why a tyre behaves in this way. Tyres are made out of many components including rubber compound, steel belts and fabric cords. These components are cured together in a mold.

Why does my car pull after getting new tires?

Tire Conicity & Separation Conicity is found in new tires, typically after the first rotation. It is basically a defect resulting from faulty manufacturing and is often the cause of a vehicle pulling hard to one side. Belts are not perfectly aligned beneath the tread in tires with conicity.

Why does my truck pull hard to the right?

One of the Most Common Causes of Pulling is Wheel Alignment The most common reason a car pulls to one side is that the wheel alignment is off. Whether it skews to the side over time, or you hit a particular vicious pothole, wheel alignment will be altered by driving conditions, and it should be checked regularly.

What is the difference between lateral and radial runout?

Radial runout occurs when the tire radius is not consistent from the midpoint of the wheel to any point on the rim. This type of runout creates a “hop” or “bounce” in your wheel rotation. Lateral wheel runout refers to how much a wheel or tire “wobbles” as it rotates.

What is the maximum radial runout allowed for a tire?

.125 inches6. The maximum suggested radial runout for a rotating tire/wheel assembly is . 125 inches for both front and rear tire positions.

What is a radial run out?

Radial runout is when the axis of rotation is off-center from the main axis, but still parallel. Axial runout is when the axis of rotation is tilted to some degree from the main axis, meaning the axis of rotation is no longer parallel to the main axis.

What is radial force variation in a tire?

5 Radial force variation. Radial force variation (Fig. 16.20) refers to a difference in the stiffness of a tyre sidewall as it rotates and contacts the road. Tyre/wheel assemblies have some of this due to splices in the different piles of the tyre, but they do not cause a problem unless the force variation is excessive ...

Can uneven tire wear cause pulling?

Vehicle pull can be caused by misalignment, but it can also be caused by uneven wear on the tires, a low tire on one side, or a tire separation.

What is thrust angle?

The thrust angle is an imaginary line that is drawn perpendicular from the centerline of the rear axle, down the centerline of the vehicle. The purpose of the thrust angle is to determine if the rear axle is lined up with the center of the vehicle, as well as the front axle.

What should be checked when a tire pulls?

If a vehicle has a pulling problem, the alignment should be checked ( including cross camber, cross caster and thrust angle settings ). If the alignment is at the manufacturer's preferred settings or appropriately within the range, the following procedure can be used to confirm which tire is causing the pull.

What does it mean when a tire is pulled?

If the vehicle pull becomes more severe, the defective tire is isolated to the tire that was rotated to the front of the car. If the pulling does not change, the defective tire is isolated to the rear tire that was not rotated. A tire diagnosed as a pulling tire is a manufacturer's defect.

Why does my car pull to the side?

If a tire's internal components are misaligned as it cures, it is possible that unequal internal forces may cause the vehicle to pull to the side, even when it is steered straight ahead.

What happens if a tire has conicity?

A tire that has conicity due to a manufacturing error will be apparent right after installation or immediately following the first time the tires are rotated. Because of this, tire manufacturers warranties only cover this condition early in the tire's life.

What is the term for a tire that moves sideways?

The term derives from the time when cars were changing from bias to radials - and radials were much more prone to this. It’s caused by a tire property called concity . (Root word: cone). Conicity is a force pushing sideways to the direction of travel.

What happens if the pull doesn't change?

If the pull doesn’t change at all, then the problem is 100% alignment.

Can you wear a tire if the alignment is off?

BTW it is possible to wear concitiy into a tire. So older tires may develop a pull if the alignment is off.

Can unevenly worn tires cause pull?

An unevenly worn tire can create pull to one side. The proper way to deal with this is to move the fronts to the rear, where the effect will be minimized…unless those were unevenly worn also or you have one of those rare cars with different size rear tires, like a 350Z.

Should a tire pull to one side?

Unless the tire is worn quite a lot, however, I don’t think it should pull noticeably to one side or the other.

Can you correct uneven tire wear?

It’s almost impossible to “correct” an uneven wear pattern once it starts. Proper alignment will reduce the speed at which a tire wears, but moving the tire from one place to another won’t balance out the wear.

Can radial tires pull?

Defective radial tires can “pull” even if the alignment is perfect…But tires with uneven wear can pull also…

i purchased Falken ZIEX 215/60/16 H-rated tires from Discount Tires last week. since that particular store did not offer alignments, i went to NTB.

Do you know if the tires are directional or not? Perhaps the tire store installed the tires on the wrong way. First I have heard of radial pull with the Falkens......make sure the air pressure is correct first......beleive it or not you can't rely on the tire shop as they usually over inflate the tires when they are installed.

Having experence with the Falken Ziex 512's personally.....so far about 7 folks I know (including my wife) have them. Never had any complaints of what you are describing.

Why does my car pull to the right after a tire rotation?

The pulling gets worse as we drive faster. What happened? Did the alignment suddenly go out? We perfectly inflate the tires, but the vehicle veers hard to the right when driving. A likely cause is tire conicity, a defect in a new tire.

How to confirm a tire is a problem?

To confirm the issue we rotate the suspected tire back to the rear. If the vehicle again drives straight, we have found the problem tire.

Why is tire conicity so bad?

Tire conicity results when tire belts are not perfectly aligned when they build the tire. Placing the layer of belting to one side creates the problem. Because more belting is on one side than the other, the tire surface inflates improperly. The side with less belting is not as strong as the other.

How to diagnose tire conicity?

We first drive the vehicle to confirm the problem. After test driving, we temporarily cross the suspected tire to the other side of the vehicle. If the vehicle now pulls in the other direction, or stops pulling, it suggests tire conicity. The tire on the side with the pull, is the normal cause.

What is conicity in tires?

Tire conicity is where a properly inflated tire causes a vehicle to pull to the right or left when driven. Tires do not get conicity. They manufacture them with the tendency. It is considered a defect and tire manufacturers cover tire conicity under their warranty, if we diagnose it properly and promptly.

What is the name of the tire that inflates to a cone shape?

Inflation pushes the tread out, more on the side with less belting. The result is a tire that inflates to a cone-shape, thus the name conicity. When we roll a cone on a flat surface, it rolls in a circle toward the point of the cone.

Why does my car pull?

Always verify the tire pressure, with a precision gauge, before condemning a tire. A tire with low pressure increases rolling resistance and causes a pull. Low air pressure in one tire also causes the vehicle to lean.
