Depends on the filter medium but most paper pleated filters should be cleaned/flushed with a garden hose sprayer weekly/bi-weekly at most depending on bather load. They should be deep cleaned with a filter wash every 6 weeks. Should last a year to year and a half. Cleaner the filters the cleaner the water and will lessen chemical need.

I use replaceable filters that I buy from the spa store which screws into the filter housing without any issue. Regardless, I replaced the filter and it was time to also drain and refill the tub with fresh water.
