Formication is the feeling of insects crawling across or underneath your skin. The name comes from the Latin word “formica,”which means ant. Formication is known as a type of paresthesia. Paresthesia happen when you feel sensations on your skin that don't have a physical cause. Paresthesia can take many forms.

Will formication go away?

Formication linked to drug withdrawal is usually temporary and should resolve when a person recovers from withdrawal. If the sensation continues or is very intense, it could be due to drug psychosis.

Can formication be caused by anxiety?

Like other hallucinations, this is a symptom of psychosis that can occur in schizophrenia. But depression and anxiety are the most common psychiatric conditions associated with formication. It also is seen in patients with OCD, PTSD, and bipolar disorder.

Is formication a mental illness?

This means that you're feeling a sensation that has no physical cause. Formication can be a symptom of several conditions. These conditions include fibromyalgia and Parkinson's disease. Withdrawal from alcohol or drug use can also trigger formication.

Why does formication happen?

Formication can be a result of stimulant intoxication or withdrawal (methamphetamine, Datura, cocaine, MDMA aka ecstasy) or alcohol withdrawal in alcoholics (i.e. delirium tremens), and is often accompanied by visual hallucinations of insects (formicanopia).
