Thats not very typical here in the "south" but with the salt on the roads ect.. I can see it in your area. I would recommend looking around to find "custom" muffler shops, and even custom car shops to get quotes. You can go with "After market" pipes and Mufflers and spend WAY less than $1400.

thanks for your help. I went to Monro Muffler - that's who quoted me $1,400 ($300 less if they save the chrome plated tips). My next stop is the Nissan dealer. Will probably be $2,000

Since it doesn't influence your safety I'd wouldn't buy an oryginal part. BTW, shouldn't you sitll have a warranty (it should be covered)?

i had the muffler pipe break off at the connection to the long pipe. not sure if this is what happened to you. i went to midas and they used a sleeve to reconnect the pipes and just welded it together. the cost was $120. it has held up very well. that muffler is stainless steel and runs about $400.

Same thing happened to me on my 2005 murano. The muffler is in good shape, it is just the diamond shaped end that rusted which is not stainless. The worst part is that it wouldn't have broken, except for that the dealer was doing the recall catylic converter gasket replacement and bent the pipe down so low they broke it. Jerks.
