question about "ser" "estar" "ir"

Hi, from previous discussions I understands there's no easy to identify "ser" and "estar", however may I confirm "en" must come with "estar". And if I see "a/al" it must come with "ir" (ir and ser have same El Pretérito Indefinido)?

Question about representing the past

hi. Im a litttle confused as to when we use "fui" to represent the past, and say "i was" vs "estuve" vs "era" .... To say, for instance, "i was en Mexico" I can say both "estuve en Mexico" and "fui en Mexico", whats the actual difference between the two...

What would help with some of the examples, to clarify why it is preterito that should be used, not imperfecto, is to give more context..

As this lesson is a conjugation one, so we want to test the "form" not the "usage" we always give hints to which tense to conjugate. Some sentences that we've used have time frames but others don't as they are not essential.
